Don't Make This CRITICAL Mistake Growing Tomatoes
----------------------------------------------------------------------------------

In today's episode, I'm going to share with you a common mistake that new tomato gardeners often make without even knowing it that can destroy your tomato harvest. There are two main types of tomato plants, indeterminate tomato plants and determinate tomato plants. And while they are both tomatoes and the fruit is indistinguishable from each other, they behave very differently.

Whether a tomato plant is a determinate or indeterminate variety will be clearly labeled on each individual seed packet or in the listing if you order your seeds online or from a catalog. The overwhelming majority of tomato varieties are indeterminate tomatoes. So when you watch pruning tutorials online for how to best prune your tomato plants, you are probably watching videos on how to prune indeterminate tomato plants, and that can cause a major problem.

Great definition. New gardeners would never know this!

I have had seed packets that dont say determinate or indeterminate. Is there a way to distinguish if you dont know?

Very interesting. I have been wondering about this myself lately. I think it's not only the pruning that is not necessary (or counter-productive), but maybe also the principle of leaving just one plant and removing all the others. I have recently started growing cherry tomatoes from an old tomato and have several plants growing next to each other. They seem to do very well together and are now flowering. For some reason videos on YouTube suggest removing all plants except one. But this seems contrary to the way it happens in nature, when one tomato falls to the ground and all its seeds sprout and grow next to each other. For now I am leaving my tomatoes untouched and am waiting to see what will happen.

This video has given me information I did not have. Which is going to adjust the course of how I design for this coming fall so thank you very much for your video. Cheers from So Fla USA

Question. Can I top the indeterminate and it still produce new fruit. I’ve bought ( by mistake) and planted the growing type and have no structures to support.

Its advised to not take of the suckers of smaller varieties such as Cherry tomatoes. Even though Cherry tomatoes are indeterminate you should grow them as determinate (Bush). You will get a much higher crop.
