NASA's Ingenuity helicopter is traveling to Mars attached to the belly of the Perseverance rover and must safely detach to begin the first attempt at powered flight on another planet. Tests done at NASA’s Jet Propulsion Laboratory and Lockheed Martin Space show the sequence of events that will bring the helicopter down to the Martian surface.

The FAA will never allow this drone to fly over Mars without a spotter.

I am just amazed how accurate their calculation is. The rovers do touch safely on Mars on Feb 18th. Just amazing

as a musician, i love the fact that they paid attention to match the pitch of the drone's blades to the background music. It was satisfying to my ears.

They put pockets in the underside of the rover, just to get enough space for the legs of the Helicopter. Amazing

I saw the first step in 69 and can tell you for me this is the most exciting mission since. And this is just the start of helicopters on Mars.

I'm going to use my quad copter experience to give some advice.
Watch out for power lines!

The atmosphere is so thin (1% of earth) there that it will be flying at around the equivalent of about 100, 000 feet in altitude here on earth. Those blades spin very fast. Having about 1/3 earth gravity also helps. Good luck on the landing tomorrow!

Those folks over at JPL have a serious love for pyro bolts.

I really want that little microphone they equipped Percy with to record the sound of the first flight. I hope it wasn't just a little trick for the first press conference showing that little bit of martian wind; I really hope we can hear the drone take off, synced with some footage from one of the many cameras Percy has. This is really cool.
