The New Story of Business: Capitalism in the 21st Century

A quiet revolution is sweeping the business landscape. The old story of business is slowly changing. There are many suggestions for a more human centered version of capitalism, such as conscious capitalism, inclusive capitalism, impact investing, socially responsible investing, etc. And there is renewed interest around the world in older ideas such as corporate social responsibility and sustainability. However these changes settle out, there are a number of key principles that are important. This lecture will focus on these principles that undergird this new story of business that is emerging. The principles include the importance of purpose, values and ethics, stakeholders, a more robust understanding of business as embedded in society, and a more complex idea of the human beings who are engaged in business.
