Bucket handle meniscus tears of the knee are common. When they become displaced they cause severe knee pain and locking. In most cases they require surgical repair.
Because of the three-dimensional characteristics of this tear I thought it was important to create a diagram to help my patients understand exactly what they are dealing with and why I recommend surgery.

Just had my surgery 7 days ago. Walking around doing my exercises and stretches. Biggest advice for people post op is to use your knee. So not gimp along with crutches bc they are just that. Its a crutch. Your knee physically can handle it, its a big mental game bc you still feel that pain as if it were pre surgery. Dont get crazy with it but use your knee. Its the only way to strengthen those weakened muscles and tendons that make your knee feel sturdy as if you werent injured. Its painful and uncomfortable but if you skimp on PT your knee will take twice as long to heal and will never be what it was before. It will take years for you to fully trust it again. I know this from experience. The surgery i had seven days ago was my second meniscus surgery but on my other knee this time. Just my two cents
