From what I understand about powering EVs using fossil fuels, the increase in efficiency come in the form of not having to transport the fuel from place to place as it will all be distributed from a central location over the existing powerlines. That also reduces the amount of carbon going into the atmosphere in the form of less tail pipes from non-EVs.
