In this guitar lesson we're looking at Major 7 and extended chords to use in Shoegaze and Alternative rock. Including Maj7 Maj11 Maj13 and many more colourful chords.
The Major 7 has become a staple of Shoegaze in recent times and I've put together a few of my favourite voicings for a very modern sound for beginner to advanced guitarists.
There are some etudes at the end of the video to practice.

Thank you, Chris! Of all the teachers on YouTube, you are the most pleasant and literate, you also have very organic music and pleasant videos with soft colors, such a warm homely atmosphere, it's so cool! When I got carried away with shoegaze, about 2 years ago, I didn't know where to start and tried different guitar tunings and came up with my own, just like you shifted chords along the fingerboard, shifted individual fingers. Thus, I composed more than 50 musical sketches for my future songs, but I was very tired of constantly rebuilding the guitar and it was not suitable for live performances at all. And I came to the conclusion that I need to play in the standard format, but I ran into one problem. Out of habit, my hands began to play memorized chords and ordinary standard music began to turn out, while in other formations something new and unusual turned out, and this put me at a dead end. But after watching your video about power chords and this, I realized that even simple chords can be varied and made musically. You've helped me a lot!

Great video. Your explanations are very understandable for someone like me who doesn’t know a lot. A perfect middle ground of getting a little technical without leaving me lost

To me, there's something special about drop tuning power chords. Just pepper in some flourishes and you're set. 7 chords have a special spot in my heart as well. They remain super versatile while adding enough of a twist.

Love these videos!!! So useful and informative without bogging it down in technicalities!! I like the "just pick it up and play" mentality! I usually noodle around so much until something sounds decent and i love that youre encouraging that type of playing! Sidenote: i picked up the "wavecrusher" from sonicake and its a lofi powerhouse! Its a bit crusher but im only using for the sample rate reducer and it also has a setting to emulate a radio and a grammaphone! Paired up with some chorus, reverb and delay it sounds sooo cool!

I don't think we were thinking about the same song- but I was reminded of the opening chord of "Love Like Blood" by Killing Joke :D

I'm just a hobbyist, but I got puzzled eyebrow raising when I told a folk musician I felt that shoegaze and jazz rhythm guitar method had a significant overlap! I'm stoked it's not just me that had that takeaway.

My favourite answer to where should I use [this type of chord] is:

Where it sounds good, or weird, or bad

Unrelated to the topic of the video but what are your opinions on heavy shoegaze, or shoegaze influenced bands from other genres? e.g. Cloakroom; Deftones; Godspeed You! Black Emperor.

Your tone and usage of major 7ths reminds me of the Mateus Asato rendition of Dont Dream It's Over

Good video.

However, I’ve been enormously distracted by the bushes hoofing about in the gale force winds outside.
