I don't get it why such a good channel of this educated Japanese sir that speaks fluent English and perfectly understands both Western and Eastern worlds has so few views. I don't wanna say anything bad about other japanese channels about japan but difference in levels of competence are pretty big and yet this video doesn't even have 1k views >:( I mean level of this content is like amazing. It's like friendly lessons and communication at the same time with high-quality design work (typography and graphics) and top-content. It really let me actually learn about Japan, not just make guesses...

Shogo-san, after I learn Japanese language I am really going to visit Japan, starting with Kyoto and I really wish I meet here people like you actually.

Sadly, I was one of the ones that hurt himself when trying to sheathe it. I was 6 and I was being shown to cup it and let the back of the blade glide again my hand and... well... I was was super excited and went way faster than I should have and poked my hand with the tip lol. Learned to take my time from then on when I was training 😂

My 3 yr old daughter currently use a wooden sword in her training. She is getting well with the 1st up to 3rd iado kata. Teach them early, so they say.

My sensei told me he's heard of a few cases of people injuring themselves. Like one man sheathing his katana within his forearm because he wasn't trained, or quite a few sending their blades flying out of their hand because they were practicing with a fake sword, with no mekugi to keep the metal in place. Most of the injuries are just from people who think they know what to do, but actually don't.

This technique really reminds me of Zenitsu's iaido! It's so amazing and fast!

I find the noto to be one of the hardest things to do in iaido. It's a lot of muscle memory that your body gets tuned to. When I got my new iaito, I had to relearn my noto due to the fact that my new katana was longer than my previous one. It really is a precision movement and very beautiful part of all iaido kata when done correctly. I also love how it fascinates people who see someone do it in real life for the first time too.

What about the fact that the oil from a hand generally damages fine carbon steel swords? If you run the back of the blade along your hand, wouldn't that expose it to the oil and degrade the blade? Love to hear some thoughts on this.

Shogo-san is my long distance and teacher. As I am very interested in Iaido and there isn't actually any Dojo around I watch his videos to learn the basics haha

i tried on scissors and it really worked. the hand really guides the blade to the inside only hard part in you hand being a scabbard is its really possible to hit your hand with sharptip of it.

Thanks! I was always terrified of keeping my sword close to the blade

I finally got myself my first Katana (Not sharp) and this video was so helpful! I never knew about using your hand as a rail, that's really clever!

Imagine sheathing a reversed-edge katana like Kenshin Himura's from the manga Rurouni Kenshin.

Yeah, I did too..Did so when I had quite a bit of practice at it, and was pretty quick (rather efficient to be technical) and the tip got me just below the webbing of my thumb.

One thing that I do not think was mentioned was the index finger placement to help guide the blade into the sheath. Makes a big difference (at least for me) to get it concealed without issue

Love your videos. There are many ways to sheathe a Shinken/Iaito, and different schools have different methods, but most have one single principle: the Saya goes to the blade. Use the left hand to sheathe, do NOT use the right hand to sheathe. Saya goes to the blade, not the blade goes to the saya.
