Why Do Floods Happen?

Flooding can happen almost anywhere – near bodies of water or even in deserts. In Florida, flooding is most common along the coast, near rivers and in other places where drainage systems overflow.

Coastal flooding happens when wind or waves from a storm surge pushes water onto the coast or when high tides are higher than usual. Rising sea levels are making this more common.

When inland waterways overflow or drainage systems can’t keep up with rainfall, that’s called surface flooding. Heavy rains falling in a short period of time can cause flash flooding.

Just an inch of water in your home can cause tens of thousands of dollars in damage, while just a foot of floodwater in streets can sweep a vehicle off the road.
