You need to have solid principles when it comes to friendships / intimate relationships. With me, I have always had at least two principles. 1) not to engage in worldly dealings with individuals who publicly neglect their five daily prayers and 2) never to make close friends with people who are casually profane.

For the first kind, I’ve this conviction: if someone can’t even fulfill their most basic obligation to their Creator, how can they be trusted in their dealings with His creation? From observation, I often find them dishonest in their dealings. If they share / narrate something, it’s heavily embellished (often far from the truth)… best to take whatever they say with a grain of salt. Applied this rule even in the days when I wasn’t a regular praying person myself. (Although, this doesn’t mean that everyone who prays is automatically truthful).

As for those who are openly, shamelessly profane, if that’s the behaviour they display in public, how much of a hayaless they must be in private? If you pay attention, they also show a complete lack of seriousness in matters… just a bundle of chaotic emotions and carrying unending drama and sensation with them with very little of value to offer. Exactly the kind of people (the shallow, superficial kind) you shouldn’t seek to build meaningful, deep relationships. AVOID!
