I know I’m ten months late but I think it’s because none of the other kids had an opportunity like Greg did. Greg randomly got lucky with two kids asking what time it was and he just so happened to be there. The other kids might have just been doing their work and not doing anything else. Greg never specifically stated that he got popular because he was smart, he said he got popular because of the fudge dogs and knowing the time. All he said about being smarter was that his grades were better and they probably didn’t contribute to his popularity
