SMT basicly sets the focus on the gameplay, while Persona plays kinda like a slice of life Visual Novel sometimes, I also often found the time mangement actually more dificult than the fights and bosses themself.

The biggest difference is the power of friendship

Meanwhile, SMT eat friendship for snacks

tbh i think persona is easier (not persona 1 and 2 tho) while smt is for more experienced Atlus fans

I'm halfway through my first persona play through and I'm enjoying it. I've listened to ost from SMT in the past and knew the games were somehow connected but never sure how exactly. Perfect video thank you

I started off with Persona 4 and 5 than Shin Megami Tensei 4, I prefer Shin Megami because its more action packed, harder and not so bogged down with cut scenes and filler.

I feel like smt goes for the more darker storyline and harder gameplay while persona games are more lighthearted and not as dark as smt and the gameplay is a bit easier. Also Thanks for another awesome vid midnight!

I would say SMT has a higher focus on Gameplay and Worldbuilding, while Persona has a higher focus on Characters and Story.

Great video man, I agree, Persona never killed SMT, if anything it gave it a hell of a chance to become bigger than it ever has been. I don't entirely agree with the statement of there being nothing like the Social Link system in any other SMT titles though, as Devil Survivor 2 has the Fate system which is at least kiiiinda similar. Sure, it's not as deep, but you still have to prioritize who to spend time with which takes time out of your day in-game, and then you have dialogue options where you can level up that character's friendship with you over time, with each level unlocking Strengths and Resistances for that character as well as benefits for the main character when fighting alongside that character in battle. It's not the same as Social Links, but I feel if you're a fan of the SC system, you'll probably appreciate the Fate system on some level as well.

My first persona game was P3. And the biggest difference to me was in P3 and 4 you battled shadows. The demons from SMT were only featured as personas and felt more like cameos. In p5 they were fully featured as fightable enemies.

I'd like to think that when a persona fan plays a megaten game and in vice versa. The Persona player would underestimate Megaten while Megaten player would overestimate Persona.

In my opinion, the best way to enjoy these two series is to avoid comparing one to the other. SMT has a challenge that Persona will never have. SMT boss fights felt like chess matches as opposed to spamming your strongest spell over and over. On the other hand, Persona has its own charm that SMT doesn't have, social links/confidants and the humor. Interacting with each character and watching them grow stronger (physically and emotionally) throughout the game is my favorite part of Persona. Both are great A+ series tho

Started with Persona 5: eventually I'll continue with Persona 5 Royal then Persona 4 Golden and Persona 5 The Phantom Strikers.

I haven't played any of the SMT games: unfortunately all I here is that they're extremely punishing, non-beginner friendly and since I'm a casual gamer, I don't see myself playing them.

My favourite Shin Megami Tensei game is Strange Journey

my favourite Spinoff is the Devil survivor remake series.

Smt5v is my favorite atm but P3R is a close 2nd.

I think the biggest difference is that Persona is more character focused where as SMT focuses on pretty much every aspect, like looks, gameplay, story, characters, etc.

Persona is also a lot easier. The hardest boss in P3 (that isn’t Elizabeth) is way easier than the average boss in most Smt.

To me the main difference are the waifu bait bullcrap. Can't change my mind about this. Unless there are smt games where you can romance every female character that talks

I need to know do I still pick up the standard SMT 5 for switch or do I pick up this new version?
