Persona explores a lot of dark themes and there's usually terrible things happening, but it generally carries a hopeful tone. You CAN find a reason to live, you CAN find the truth, you CAN break free of your chains. Not only saving the world, but making it just a little better than it was before you started. SMT is typically incredibly bleak, very often taking place during if not after the actual apocalypse and dragging you through a world of mayhem. Even the greater difficulty of SMT games is part of this theme; You're desperately clawing your way through Hell and in the end you can only hope to achieve the basest existence, or if you're really lucky, take the world back to how it was for a few years before it inevitably declines again for the same reasons.

In a Persona game, you prevent the nightmare. In the rest of SMT, you're living it.
