The Battle of Thermopylae was fought in 480 BC between the Achaemenid Persian Empire under Xerxes I and an alliance of Greek city-states led by Sparta under Leonidas I. It was a series of conflicts between the Persian Empire, led by Xerxes, and various Greek city-states. The main cause of the war was the expansionist policies of the Persian Empire and their desire to conquer the Greek city-states.
