What McDonald's Employees Wish You Knew

Most of us have eaten at McDonald's enough to think we know how it works pretty well. But unless you've actually worked there, there's probably still plenty you don't know about what goes on behind the counter. You may not be aware that some of the things you do as a customer actually makes the employees' jobs harder.

Thankfully, some current and former employees have pulled back the curtain to let us all know what we can do to make things go as smoothly as possible. And you might even be able to score cheaper food to boot! Here's what McDonald's employees wish you knew.

If you've ever worked at McDonald's, what was it like?

As a former manager, I always tell a customer who has to park that his food is being prepared fresh. Because most of the time, that's why there is the wait.

That scene from " Falling Down" is hilarious when played in it's entirety.

For the complaint about waiting in slow drive-thru, then not knowing what u want when u get to the speaker: Maybe the should put a menu(make sure its up-to-date) ahead of the speaker so it can be read BEFORE getting to the speaker to order. I've been going there for years and basically order same thing. Every once in awhile I want to try something new or somebody in my car does. If we could've seen the menu ahead we can have it together. OR you go specifically for something that on menu and the say the offer is OVER. Now you have to shift your taste gears ... another stall at the order speaker.

At my store, we just shake the fries directly from the basket into the box, the driest are still wet with oil and we burn ourselves

If you want the grilled cheese, stay home and make it yourself.

Maurice: Mr. McDowell? There's some people here to see you Sir. Mr. McDowell: They're not from McDonald's are they? Maurice: I don't think so Sir. - ("Coming To America." (1988).

The problem with drive-thrus is that you have to know menu pretty well to use it. You can't stop to study menu before going to order spot. Even there, cars will be honking at you too pull up when cars in front of you do. At least inside, you can study menu before walking up to cashier. This is why I like fast food places that have printed menus you can keep in car or at home to read before you even go to the restaurant.

McDonald's and KFC are literally the bottom of the barrel of fast food 🤮

Back in the late 70s the local McDonald’s donated food to a fund raising event my buddy and I organized.

Interesting. Sounds like most of these little problems and inconveniences are caused by customers. Ordering things that aren't on the menu, getting snippy with food service employees who have a job to do and rules they have to follow, etc. I learned a long time ago never to give an attitude to someone who's preparing my food.

As an experienced customer service person, I can definitely say that customers in general have gotten nastier over the years. They get sarcastic and insulting over any little problem without asking for a solution, and they know that they can get away with it because "they're the customer."

Here is another tip, if you plan on doing a big orders make sure you order it through mobile so the drive thru or front counter person doesn’t mess it up. Not only that but most fast food chains now have reward points on their mobile app that allows you to redeem free items after you hit a certain amount of points.

No I have not memorized the entire menu since I very rarely go to McDonald’s so forgive me for asking for a minute to look at the menu. They could simply make the menu visible to cars waiting in line and not only on top of the speaker. I know I can look it up on my phone while waiting but why bother? What’s in it for me?

I have no sympathy for the Overpaid McDuffels employee. Makes me mad to see them playing with their phones while the line backs up around the building.

The closest McDonald's to us is at a gas station. No seating, just drive through. They routinely charge more for burgers than the price listed on the McDonald site. Since it's drive-through there's no easy way to complain without holding things up. When I order a McDouble with Mac sauce it costs more than a big Mac.

My brother never wants his mcdonald’s burgers without the relish/ salsa and pickles always included by default (at least the UK ones). So we always had to wait when we went through the drive thru

Why don't they have a menu board at the front end of the line so you can look at it while your waiting in line to be next? Then we wouldn't hold things up looking at it when we get to the microphone.

I worked for BK, I was the Broiler Person, and before I went over to DQ I was put on the line to put the burgers together.
The rule for the steamer was there had to be a Certain number of burgers in it, after a set time and they weren't sold, they were tossed.
Funny thing was, when I Packed the steamer I stayed up with demand, when I followed their rules, I ran out several orders in.
(But when I went DQ, I was the person behind the counter, and Loved it. Puls I can say I worked for Roalty. The King of Burgers and the Queen of Dairy. But DQ is the only of the 2 I'd go back to if given the chance.
