Quantum Gravity Explained in 9 Slides

Our best theories of physics are incomplete, quantum mechanics and general relativity don’t work when we try and put them together so physicists have been looking for a grand unifying theory of quantum gravity for decades, and so far have failed. This is because it is virtually impossible to make an experiment where the large and small scales meet, so we look to the places in our universe where this happens naturally: black holes and the big bang via the cosmic microwave background. In this video I explain what our best theories are and how we are trying to get to a theory of quantum gravity.

How do you arrive at 24 orders of magnitude? F_coulomb/F_gravitational = e^2/(4*pi*epsilon_0*G*m_e^2) = 4.166*10^(42)
Or am I stupid?

When I see Chaos Theory almost spanning out its reach in all three domains of physics, I just cant help but think about the underrated relevance of what that subject might be to us and the Universe itself.

Dominic's "Posh Narrator Voice" is hilarious. And very convincing: Before his reveal, it took some very close listening to be sure it actually was Dominic. If the graphics had been tweaked slightly, I would have been wondering how a Kurzgesagt video got onto the DoS channel...

Dom, thank you so much for making this high quality educational video! Your content really motivates me to learn more and study harder. Science is so beautiful.

Perfect David Attenborough voice mimic, such a cosy documentary style!
And as always, very nice content!

"This part of the video is sponsored by Brilliant"
They only sponsored their own ad? That's kind of selfish. They could at least pay for the whole thing.

A very comprehensive and formidable glimpse of quantum gravity.
Never found such elegant introductory of quantum gravity on internet. Great work👏😊👍!!

These subtitles are brilliant, Just a shame that youtube doesn't recognize latex

4:35 CERN isn't the particle accelerator, it's the organization who constructed the accelerator. The accelerator itself is called the LHC, Large Hadron Collider. Therefore the statement _need a CERN the size of the solar system_ is incorrect. Just thought I'd point this out. Great video!

This was the first video I've seen from your channel, and at first I legit thought the narrator was a David Attenborough sounds-alike. Then your voice changed to a relaxing YouTube scientific channel host type. Very relaxed. Great work :)

Thanks for this great video! I am, however, confused about the equivalence that you make between quantum gravity (QG) and a theory of everything (TOE). My understanding is that they are distinct. That is, a TOE seeks to unify all fundamental interactions into a single mathematical framework whereas QG “simply” seeks to describe the quantum behaviour of the gravitational field. As I’ve understood, String Theory attempts to be a TOE whereas Loop Quantum Gravity does not as it “only” seeks to quantise gravity and not unify all of the forces into one framework. Grateful for your input!

I was introduced to your channel by the map of mathematics and I'm not wrong in stating that you are having some of the finest video on YouTube in your cap.
Well done.

I’d put my bets for a TOE on pilot wave theory, where space-time is the fabric which is ‘waving’, thereby linking QM and GR at the base. John Bush and coworkers are unraveling things step by step.

Mathematically speaking, QFT and GR are among the most beautiful theories ever devised. To find a true Quantum Theory of Gravity (i.e. one that’s subject to falsifiability and experimental verifications) we need a radically new theory that’s even more BEAUTIFUL. And that’s no easy feat. It’s not about brut force, it’s all about the beauty of the underlying ideas, and the candy-like mathematics that falls out of them.
