The effort put forward by these gentlemen should be commended. However, we need to move beyond simple paper maps which provide very little context, especially when talking about the mountainous terrain of Italy. The next logical step is to put the campaign data into a 3D map environment (like Google Earth) and show movement over time (have a little date calendar progressing as troops move along the 3D surface. A user can zoom in and out and rotate the view as desired. One could also virtually stand on the same ground as Caesar and look around to assess the situation. Additional context could show distance from supply lines, movement of adversary forces, range rings of various weapons, time of year would show mud and snow which significantly inhibits troop movement, the progressive loss of troops due to fighting and exposure. Also various overlays could be turned on and off -- population density, topographic overlays, overlays, overall campaign strategy, etc. Distance and altitude measuring tools would also be helpful both as the birds fly and surface level. My $0.02

these are masterpieces. I wish someone would do some for the memoirs of US Grant. Also, I hope that Strassler can make it to Polybius.

A Landmark Plutarch of the Parallel Lives would be extraordinary.

Or a Landmark Livy's 35 books on Rome.

Roman shows/movies dont seem to show slingers ever... people can use ancient slingshots today and drive stones accurately and deep into wood. 1 trained slinger could take down so many horsemen easily. You hit that horse with one of those slings and its going to either drop dead, freak out and smash into the other horses causing pure havoc. Romans had bullets, they were just quiet.
