She expected to hear a number of football fields instead of miles

Guys 1 light year is a unit of distance not time. Some mix these up its completely fine.

I mean, I think what she was trying to ask was how long it would take for us to travel with our current travel capabilities… after a bit of digging research on spacecraft, the two quickest spacecraft would take:

1. Voyager 1 Speed (38, 000 mph):
At this speed, it would take around 73, 000 years to reach Proxima b.
2. New Horizons Spacecraft Speed (52, 000 mph):
It would still take about 54, 400 years to get there.

This is also considering that spacecraft maintains their speed and trajectory while somehow being able to also refuel itself, which is currently not possible.

did the math, traveling 24 trillion miles (4 light years) at 17, 500 mph (about average speed of a rocket) it would take roughly 157, 000 years

Guys she's blond, you gotta be understanding.

She was clearly looking to see how long a light year would take for us to travel

To make this simpler voyager 1 travels at 38, 000 mph it would take voyager 1 17, 000 years to travel 1 light year so if a normal human were to walk 1 light year at around 2 mph which is somewhat normal walkspeed it would take 335 million years to travel 1 light year which is what I believe the lady was asking him!

Reasonable to be confused if you don’t know a light YEAR is a unit of distance

I feel like he is smart enough to answer the question without just repeating what he's already said...

That’s why Neil is so good. He will explain it as many times as you need for your brain to comprehend without getting frustrated. He is a genuine genius.

If a car was going 90 mph it would take about 10 -12 million years to get just 1 light year if you fancy walking (3mph) it puts it about 200 million years

Her questions give me pain. How was any of this confusing. 😂😭

Incase anyone is wondering, with current spacecraft speeds(voyager being the fastest one we have currently in space) would take between 19, 000 years and 81, 000 years. We only have about 4-5% of light speed travel, even if we managed to get 6-7% of light speed, it would still be 25, 000 years until us or the voyager reaches it

ok..

I feel like, he couldve said “if you were traveling at the speed of light” as “on a light beam” is weird, but she still shouldve understood after the second explanation

Its completely understandable, if someone hears '1 light year' for the first time, They are going to think it is one year in some different contexts of time rather than distance.

Love how people still don't know that a lightyear is a distance

6 Trillion Miles
-What does it equal too?
6 Trillion Miles
-How Long is that
6 Trillion Miles
