One of my friends is a cop and one night when we were drunk in another of our friend’s backyard, he gave some of us a field sobriety test, just for fun. Needless to say, had any of us been driving at that moment, we would have for sure been arrested. It’s all fun and games until you decide to break the law and put yourself and everyone around you in danger. Never risk it, always have a designated *sober* driver.

Even if you walk a straight line without stumbling, they can claim that you used your arms for balance (which is natural when walking a tight rope) and they can say you turned with too wide of steps, or improperly, that you were wobbling, that you followed heel to toe improperly, that you didn’t follow directions 100%, there are many check marks they can can check off and they only need 3 to say you failed. It’s really designed to their discretion of wether or not they feel like taking you in.

i got stopped for a headlight out, and the female ohio state trooper gave me this test. i haven't drank ANY alcoholic beverages for 9 years before this test and i don't do any type of drugs, both of which i told the trooper. i failed the walking test do to a bad ankle that has been sprained many times and is very weak, i supposedly had bloodshot eyes (i had just woke up about 15 minutes prior and hadn't even had a sip of coffee yet), the breathalyzer read 0.00%, and she still kept trying to get my to confess to being intoxicated, which i was not. after about 15 minutes of bs, she asked "if i had your urine tested, do you think you'd pass?". i said i would not only pass, but if arrested i would demand an IMMEDIATE blood AND urine test, and when that came back clean, i would demand she be at lest fined for wasting my time as she never even mentioned the headlight again, which i fixed the next morning.

I can’t do this when I’m sober. The cops are like if you are not a gymnast you will fail this test. And even if you are a gymnast we will fail you anyway.

NEVER NEVER NEVER do "field sobriety test" that requires physical activity. NEVER.
The Police get to decide if you pass, and you won't, because (a) you're nervous and (b) the police get to decide.
REFUSE this test. Even if it means that you might get arrested. When this test is proposed, politely refuse, and politely state that you will not answer any more questions.

the first test alone is enough to determine whether you are drunk, simply because if you are drunk, your eyes won't be able to smoothly follow the stigmant. The worse your eyes follow, the more intoxicated. Now, if you have an underlying medical condition that might make it seem like you are drunk, then the test also can show that. Basically, much more accurate than a breathalyzer.

I would kind of like an explanation of what the officer is looking for when doing the Horizontal Gaze test. Just shows how its done doesn't say what he's looking for.

Sobriety tests should have a mandatory "bras and panties only" dress code attached to the testing procedure.

Most senior citizens would probably have trouble with the leg lift and counting part.

I feel that a yoga practiser can beat these tests while being perfectly mildly drunk.

If a police officer asks you to do the leg lift, is there a legal limit to how long they can require you to keep your leg in the air? Because if not, technically the officer can basically guarantee your failure if they never tell you to stop or if they wait absurdly long to do so. Eventually, you’d get too tired to hold your leg up and they’d have reason to arrest you even if you’re sober.

Never take these tests if you are stopped for a DUI investigation. All they do is build a case for the officer.
