I Got $1083 Compensation on my Last Cruise - Here's How

I recently disembarked a cruise and it’s safe to say that the cruise didn’t exactly go to plan. We had bad weather, we were seasick, we had issues with excursions but I did come away from the cruise with $1083 in compensation which definitely made a big difference.

I’ve spoken to lots of other people who were on the cruise who missed out, some of which only realised that they were entitled to compensation when they got home and because they had to do a few things while onboard, it was too late.

A chance conversation once with a stranger on the Lido deck once opened my eyes to missed port insurance. She had missed several and also had a delayed return. After the cruise lines refunds and insurance claims she had paid less than £100 for a 16 night cruise. First thing I did was upgrade my cruise insurance to cover all bases. So glad you all got some money back.

We were on Iona in nov/dec and had 2 missed ports 1 changed port and we departed 24hrs late. The insurance company paid out £800 more than we paid for the cruise so we were thrilled to bits

My last cruise was before covid on this ship, I had exactly the same experience! I’ve cruised since I was a young child and this was my first cruise as an adult and I was almost put off! I’m loving your videos, Cunard is my favourite company to cruise with because I love the formality of the trips. The venture was horrific in my opinion xxx

Thanks to your video we were able to claim £200 through our insurer for a Missed Port last year. We tipped off relatives who had a similar experience later in the year & they were also able to make a claim. Thanks for highlighting this compensation.

Oh man I wish I knew this! We missed a port back in Jan 2020! Wish I knew about this then - will definitely remember if this happens on our next cruise so thank you!

This is an excellent and informative video, so few people know to check on these things. The cruise line won't proactively tell you about it and you have to take the initiative with both the cruise line and the insurance company to get what you deserve. I'm glad that you were able to do this for you and your family.

Great insight Emma, really useful video. We missed a port on Oceana and P&O gave everyone a letter regardless, guess it depends on the management team onboard

Thanks Emma. On a P&O cruise where we missed ports a note from the Captain could be picked up from reception. You have certainly highlighted something we now need to be aware of.

Thanks for another brilliant video Emma - this is so helpful and informative 😀 cruise specific travel insurance really is a must for any cruise, and taking the time to read that small print can make all the difference 😊

We are glad to see that your claim was processed so quickly! That's a great result!

I'm glad you got it, but sorry for those who missed it. Thank you for the info; getting compensation is always nice. I just checked, and I have that coverage as well.

Super useful information! Another tip is when I travel overseas (outside of the US) I always get trip insurance because normally it includes medical coverage for the trip, which is not a normal part of your regular coverage. And as some trips include scuba, I also carry a membership in DAN, an organization that provides world wide coverage for diving mishaps. Thank again also for the details of when you need to apply as I would have missed this. Happy cruising always!

Thank you Emma for the helpful information. Definitely will now read the cruise insurance policy when we purchase it. I am glad you received money back.

This is something something that I probably would have missed because I wouldn't have looked into the whole policy thing till after I got home if at all. I do have a question - Why couldn't I just go to cruise line and get documentation after the fact. Basically it's same cruise line, they have a record of proposed and actual itinerary of their ship. They would also have a record of my presence on the ship and my cabin because the cruise line would charge me for for any missed charges. So with all the same info available why is it no good to get off ship. It would be a violation of consumer protection legislation in many jurisdictions. I mean either the cruise line or insurance company could have some irrelevant condition like you had to hop to client service desk on your left foot for exactly ten hops to get documentation between 2Am and 2;20 Am. Walking up to service desk, having too many or too few hops, or you hopped on right foot, or didn't get to desk till 2;30 Am. Your claim or request for documentation is declined. Can you elaborate.

I'm heading out on my first cruise since the restart in 11 days. I'm driving to the port and it's only a 4 day cruise with 1 port but I still bought insurance. You just never know. Thanks for the link on your website. It made it so easy to find a good policy.

You are so good at this..No one else is going to understand all that fine print! Or take the time to do the complicated math.

Exactly the same thing happened to me in January on the Iona at the same port and scenario, went to bed with the coast of Madeira outside my window and woke up with the open sea there. I got a letter from reception and then when I got home I submitted my claim. Not as generous as Emmas, but when it comes the £75 will go to another cruise. Plus my annual insurance was only £20 more than the claim so I nearly got free insurance for the year!
