After being a member of Buddy Holly's band The Crickets and escaping the fateful plane crash that took the lives of Buddy, Richie Valens and The Big Bopper, Waylon Jennings recorded for Herb Alpert's A&M label. He had little success, even with Herb as his arranger who fully supported him. Among the six songs that Herb arranged during a September 24, 1964 session at Radio Recorders in Hollywood were "The Race Is On,” a song that George Jones had just released as a single, and "Stepping Stone." Among his choice of players he led on the session, who can be heard in the songs, was guitarist James Burton. Herb had a young kid from Oklahoma named Russell Bridges (Leon Russell) play the piano on "The Race Is On" and harpsichord on "Stepping Stone." Herb loved Leon’s musical input so much, he had him called in to play sessions for his own recordings for the next six years.
Jennings later found his style and became a legendary country star.
