I grew up on Waylon and Willie from my Dad. He’s passed on a few years ago. I asked my son if he would walk me down the aisle when I get married this September. My son sent me this song. Back around 1974 I was a fifteen year old listening to WAKY AM out of Louisville. It was a contemporary rock station, but on Sunday nights they let the DJ, Coyote Calhoun play whatever he wanted (he went on to be DJ and program director at the country powerhouse WAMZ). Every Sunday night he would play Waylons cover of “Amanda” at some point. That single song hooked me on Waylon, but to a larger extent hooked me on all country music, especially the Outlaw variety. My wife and I got to see him live one time in college at the Eliot Hall of Music (Purdue...Boiler UP!...) It was a bit of a disappointment as he just didn’t seem to be into it. Years later, I saw an interview he gave and realized that the show we went to was during his worst days struggling with cocaine. I’m glad he finally beat it. I wish we could have had him longer. There will never be another like him.

For all you folks coming in from hell or high water and others new to this sound; Check out Billy Joe Shaver. He wrote this song, as well several of the 70s outlaw movement songs. Shaver is the real deal. If you like this song you'll love another Waylon song called "Loving her was easier than anything I'll ever do again". Best Waylon song ever IMO (Kristofferson written).
Hell or High water tidbit: Jeff Bridges and Robert Duvall are Billie Joe Shaver fans. Some of their movies have Shaver songs and/or Shaver himself in them.
