Columbus never proved the world was round

There is a common misconception that Christopher Columbus somehow proved the world was round by discovering the Americas. Other than being totally false, it doesn't even make logical sense.

If the Vikings discovered America 500 years prior to Columbus how did Columbus not know there was an America
