Things To Know Before Ordering An 8020 Sim Racing Rig - Featuring Trak Racer TR80 Cockpit

I built a Trak Racer TR80 and it nearly killed me. I have now (8 months later) moved onto a GT Omega Prime, link to that at the end screen. As for the Trak Racer TR80, here's what I think everyone should be aware of before buying so that it's a much more enjoyable build experience.

Links ahoy.

Trak Racer:

Wheelbase: Fanatec CSL Elite v1.1
Steering Wheel: Fanatec Mclaren GT3 V2
Pedals: Fanatec Clubsport V3

This one of the best reviews on the TR80 I have seen. Thanks!

Fair winds and following seas to all.

I built the exact same rig two weekends ago. Definitely took me longer than I expected, but I too had to undo and redo some stuff. And then when it was all together, it took me another couple of hours to dial it in just right for me.

But now that's done, and it's amazing.

This is a great video for anyone who is seriously interested in getting into an 8020 rig but one thing that I would like to add is that yes it may take you 4-10 hours to build yours I found that even after having my rig for 2 months I was still constantly adjusting it to make sure it fit me 100% perfectly and now I'm more comfortable than ever. They can be very fiddly but I would argue that people who love sim racing don't mind fiddling with something to get it perfect to them :)

I built one and had swarf and dried cutting fluid on some of the rails, open outside!, rails cut when wrapped, ditched the too short screws for new bolts from tool station, the advice in the video is spot on, take your time.

The main reason I went with a proper sim rig is because of upgrade options and how easy it makes it due to universal 8020 mods, future upgrades are much easier to plan and execute with a solid foundation, consistency in terms of everything being in the same alignment from cockpit to monitor spacing etc and lastly moving from a play seat having actual leg room without a post obstructing the centre section making heel and toe a pain in the ass without having a super odd seating and leg position hindering lap times straight from the get go

You gave the best advice I have ever heard about the time and knowing if you can build a 80/20 rig! Thanks I just got this rig!

Hi Danny. I'm on the same journey. For years I've a desk/wheel stand sim racer and now feel I'm ready to take that next step. By the second half of this year I should have enough saved up to purchase an 8020 rig like yours.

Excellent video on this model - and letting folks know it’s a big boy erector set and not going to get set up in 30 minutes.

As you said, some folk’s expectations are it looks easy to build, when they can’t build an Ikea (fill in the blank) - clever analogy.

All you need now is haptic feedback like a Buttkicker or even HF8 gaming pad, or any other brand/device to add another layer of immersion.

I’m in the planning stage right now and wanting to build my own rig, garning ideas from a few makers.

Keep up the great content!

Looks great Danny - my TR160 rig was the same - a lot of bits and quite daunting to begin with! But slowly it comes together (much to the chagrin of the wife!). Good luck breaking it in - like any setup there will be quite a few adjustments to make once you get the seat settled in and get your driving position just right. Would love to see some video on your button boxes and other peripherals setups. Good luck on the track in your new rig!

I have the exact same rig and it took me a whole weekend to build 1 month ago.
I'm still tinkering with it to find the best driving position.
One good thing from your video, I discovered I had the seat rack reversed that's why my seat was so upright.
Feels a lot better now.

I got myself a GT1 evo about 3 months ago, haven’t looked back since, adds an extra layer of immersion to my racing not worrying about my wheel or pedals moving in the heat of battle, the mounting flexibility is another fantastic reason for going profile, great content once again, keep up the great work,

Wish you joy of your new rig ! :) I am not at your level but I was thinking of doing a semi step on a smaller cockpit. Thanks for the video as always.

Completely agree about the instructions. I spent maybe 2 hours on the sliders alone. My downfall was watching a video where he installed them wrong! Which made me question everything!

Fantastic video. Really useful food for thought. I'm currently weighing up the TR8 v TR8020 right now. Tough decision!
