Out of Band Management - What is...

preview_player
Показать описание
Out of Band Management is the ability to access your network equipment remotely using a network connection other than the main one used by your organization. You can use Out of Band Management equipment to connect to management ports on network equipment and servers to connect using everything from dial up connection to LTE.

Out of Band Management is used so that remote administrators can access equipment even if something happens to the main ISP connection. Also it is used as a way to protect infrastructure equipment from hacking since it can be setup so that LAN users cannot connect to admin ports.

Incredibly concise and engaging explanation, thank you!

Good points but I think you forgot one very crucial purpose of out of band - configuration errors. When incorrect configurations get pushed to devices, and you lockout say for example SSH, or need to do diagnostics such as watching serial input when a switch is booting, I think having OOB as a way to connect in when things are not working due to either issue of equipment failure or configuration failure and being able to determine the issue or recover from the issue without having to be physically at the equipment.

Great explanation. Other videos made this concept unnecessarily complicated.

Great video, thanks! Of course, you are focusing on physical out-of-band concepts whereas--at a minimum--virtual segmentation like VLAN's can be used to separate bulk data and voice traffic from management traffic. Most Layer 3 switches, for example, default to having management ports/traffic on the same default VLAN across all switchports, often just VLAN1 out-of-the-box. So by simply setting up management ports and mgmt VLAN segmentation during initial setup or even in production systems, the out-of-band concept is being employed at least in part.
Bigger medium business and large businesses can afford to run separate physical out-of-band links for core networking devices and servers. For smaller SMB's, it's really not worth the cost unless you work in a data-sensitive industry like finance or as a MSP/MSSP.
