When it comes to the particular challenges faced by female entrepreneurs, I have firsthand knowledge and experience. In this video, I offer some empowerment strategies I’ve learned to use along the way.

As women in business, we deal with stereotypes and misperceptions, and we struggle to be taken seriously as credible experts in our fields. We need to be strategic and unapologetic in how we handle business interactions.

Here are a few empowerment strategies I’ve adopted over the years:

I’m originally from Germany, so I have a German accent. People commonly think of Germans as being hard as nails. I play into that perception with the language I use, which tends to be male-oriented and strictly business. But I counter that tough vibe with my appearance, by creating an air of womanly approachability.

Because I talk about controversial topics relating to women and equality, I get plenty of hate mail. Some people view me as an angry feminazi. They say, “Oh, you hate men; you’re probably not even married.” Well, it’s true; I’m NOT married. But I wear a wedding ring – to ward off stupid comments from people who question my womanhood.

One of the biggest challenges faced by female entrepreneurs is that men often question women’s expertise and business acumen. I deal with this issue using my “2x4 strategy.” I take out my imaginary 2x4 and figuratively whack the man in question over the head (charmingly, of course). Don’t be afraid to stand up for yourself! In the end, it makes men respect you more.
