South Africa remains the only country in history to have developed nuclear weapons and then voluntarily given them up.

With plenty of uranium available, South Africa had already become interested in nuclear energy as a source of electrical power by the early 1970s. It sought to enrich uranium for its own use and for export and, at the same time, the government began to examine the military potential of these developments.

Ultimately, South Africa succeeded in producing six complete nuclear devices that could have been deployed, plus a test device.

Honestly I don’t think the world would be safer the nuclear deterrent is what keeps European and Asian nations with strong militaries from pursuing expansionist policies towards their weaker neighbors as they did throughout most of history

From what I remember of those days, development and testing was in collaboration with Israel it was news at the time. In fact the Russians were the one that announced it to the world also Taiwan had an underground testing but it ended up being a series of earthquake the Russian also exposed that but was never verified by the west.

South Africa needs 200k reserve army force and 300k active Army. They need at least three guided missile destroyers, four more submarines, 1 light carrier.
