Britain faces “daunting challenges” ahead, David Cameron warned, as he said he was returning to government because he believed in “public service”.

Speaking for the first time since being appointed foreign secretary, Cameron said that he hoped that his six years as prime minister would give him some “useful experience and contacts” in his new role.

“I want to do everything to strengthen our alliances, to work with our friends, to build those vital partnerships and to make sure our country is secure and prosperous in a difficult and dangerous world.”

Asked about his public criticism of Sunak over scrapping HS2 Cameron said he had tried to keep “quiet about politics” since leaving office. He said that it was “hard enough being prime minister without having your predecessors endlessly giving a running commentary”.

Cameron added: “Of course I’ve disagreed with some individual decisions but politics is a team enterprise. I’ve decided to join this team, because I believe Rishi Sunak is a good prime minister, doing a difficult job at a hard time. I want to support him.”

Asked about previous lobbying roles he said that he had resigned from his roles in business before his appointment.

Can we have people we voted for please, or are we in a dictatorship?

That guy promised the British people that whichever way the country voted in the referendum he would stay on and lead the country afterwards, giving us stability. As soon as the vote didn't go the way he wanted it, he was off. I'll never forgive him for that.

The disconnect between a large swathe of Tory MPs and their voters has never been larger.

This is like Manchester United bringing back Jonny Evans 8 years after he left.

I remember going through a decade of austerity due to Cameron’s government, only for subsequent governments to print money like it’s going out of fashion! Brilliant, thanks Dave and glad your banking mates got bailed out.

Cameron doesn't have the right to come back after abandoning the country in the past

A greasy backstabber appointing a greasier backstabber, aren't our politicians wonderful?

Oh I’d forgotten that voice. Brings back memories of austerity and Brexit. Him running away immediately after the Brexit vote and leaving the country in another fine mess. The Tories are just imbeciles

Cameron is going to get a backlash. It has already begun, Cameron that took our country into Libya, he should never be seen again, especially after the years of austerity and now the country is trillions in debt.

Are we really saying that there is no other MP better than this non entity. As soon as the referendum went not the way he wanted it to, he is away on his toe’s pronto, we are shafted.

I'll explain his return. He has friends in high places and he wants to maintain good relations. "I believe in public service." Yes, of course.

A man who is despised by both sides of the EU 'divide' - by remainers for calling the referendum, and by leavers for RUNNING AWAY when his side lost, is resuscitated, by the 2nd unelected 'no-hoper' of this electoral cycle, Sunak in the [mistaken] belief he can save the Tory party from oblivion sometime 'within this year' !
In 2019 the Tories had a triumphant 'landslide victory' with Boris as leader - now they are reduced to this.
I'd be sad if l weren't SO angry..

Wasn't this the doughnut that said to the people of Tripoli that 'you're free' after he and the French got rid of Gaddafi.
😂😂
That military intervention brought utter chaos and instability to eventually uncontrolled immigration into Europe.
Well done Dave .

And now he's Foreign
