Buying that Kennedy tool box and riser earlier in the month wet my appetite for more. So I started watching local CL ads, and up pops a Kennedy box with base for $100……no photo.

I’m sure I’m a little late with a suggestion but if you’re going to paint it. And you mentioned the handle issue you could cut those handles in half and you would have enough for all drawers. Idk just a thought and this was a decade ago. Lol

I have one in my garage. It's rusty in places, missing the handles & the key. 14.5" H x 26" W x 11.5" D; 2 drawers full width; 3 narrower drawers; top lid with lock. Key is missing so unable to open lid to see model number.

i just picked up two kennedy 520's at first monday in canton for $20 for the pair!! 😁 One of them had some rust on the drawer faces and box bottom. i used naval jelly to remove the rust, but I dont know what paint to use to mock the original look, any ideas?

Scored a 520 for $40.
Great condition. Needed a working tool box. Any suggestions for painting the bottom and lower edge. Has surface rust from being left in water. Not a restore. Just a good paint for protection.
Any suggestions much appreciated.

Just scored a near mint 273b
3 drawer cabinet and 266b 6 drawer top box for $49 on marketplace. Ive found some awesome deals on there but when i showed up they had a lot of offers for a lot more money already- don't know much about them other than they are solid and tend to have a price tag

Just found a Kennedy 520 7 drawer chest for $40, looks to be about 30 years old. Has a leather carrying handle and three top latches, the center one being the bigger of the three having a key slot which the seller said he didn't have the key to. How would I go about finding a replacement key for this or replacement latch altogether? I've looked all over eBay and KennedyMFG.com and can't find a thing. Do you have any suggestions?

What did you end up doing with the tools? I love putting work into old Rusty Crusty tools and just curious. I know a lot of people who just toss them or let them die or whatever, and that’s a sad end for a tool that’s lasted decades only to not be brought back to make up for the time of the previous owner.

I don't think you over paid at all. Considering the only place I can find a Kennedy is on ebay, the cost, plus shipping- I think you did real well. Yes, they're beat up a bit, but the size of them are awesome. Nice!

Steve,

Just joined your channel! Love Kennedy tool chests. I have four risers and four machinist chests. Also have the rolling cabinet with 6-7 drawers and the big mechanics box. They really clean up well, Kennedy recommends wiping them down with WD40. I like Simple Green or Greased Lightening and a soft brush to really scrub the brown wrinkle finish. I think you got excellent prices on these. One of my upper lower combos came with a bunch of machinist tools, paid $250, but got a bunch of angle plates and a Suburban Sine plate that was worth a bunch of money. Sometimes you just strike gold. Enjoyed the video, looking forward to seeing the rest of your channel. Cheers, Eric

For anyone who wants buckets:

Ask at local bakeries, they usually just throw them out. If you ask politely and state your intended use, they'll usually give them to you. Also restaurants, pizza places, some grocery stores.

Unable to actually view your toolboxes but $100.00 is currently an ok price for a Kennedy top and bottom chests, which I don't think are ugly and/or a bad design. You can pickup a Craftsman 1000 5 drawer top with a several drawers bottom chest for around $150.00 with free shipping. However the Craftsman 1000 and similar tool chests / boxes imo don't have as nice and quality of Kennedy's. There are some older Craftsman / Kennedy tool chests that have better Kennedy quality.

If you look around at new and used tool boxes online prices vary from a few dollars to well over 1k and 2k ... Many of the used toolboxes need to be repaired and repainted I'm thinking of wet blasting to restore the three Kennedy's I have. Remove all paint and start over with a new coat.

The title of your video caught my attention. Mainly because, yes, I regard Kennedy tool boxes ugly as hell and for the life of me I'm surprised they still sell them. It's not only the color but that baked finish and the overall design that makes it look so boring and unattractive compared to mechanics tool carts that come in different colors and configurations. I also hate that bottom section that does nothing other than become a catch all tray collecting dust. In all my years as a machinist working with other machinist, I've never seen anyone use it. The design of these tool boxes should sent to the dust bin of history.
Needless to say, I will never buy one.
