New Gravel Driveway - The First Half

We have completed the driveway back to the old barn. We laid down road grade Typar and covered that with 2" rock. We then drove on it for a few weeks to make sure it was good and packed down. Then we topped it off with road pack gravel to finish.

Those truck drivers did a hell of a job of tail gait spreading ! Huge help right there !

Nice before and after. The contrast of the gray rock with the green grass is great too.

The crunch of that gravel and no talking was a great way to end the video

OMG Finally a person who does the driveway or gravel base correctly. ALL my friends just pour gravel over dirt... few years later more gavel but never enough the mud keeps coming through and grass keeps growing through it..

You built the drive way the correct way by putting down the non-woven geotextile fabric. Good job!! Your driveway will last a long time. I see SO many people just through down gravel on the dirt. That's a big NO NO in my book. Does it work yes, will it last no. They will be constantly having to add more gravel and fixing potholes. People don't realize that cloth is not just a weed barrier it actually is meant as a ground stabilizer and by prevent the gravel from being pushed in the ground over a period of years driving on it and good permeability. This is exactly how they build roads. Nicely done! I am getting ready to do mine as well soon and have my fabric already purchased.

Here in the UK Farmers use old tyres to weigh down a tarp over baled hay etc

Typar from what you say is clay underside makes more sense to use instead of regular geotextile with better permeability, the Typar with give your gravel drive a better seat and not sink into the clay as easily. At least you got the property for for the excess water to spread over so its not sitting in the gravel as much. If you ever have any what you see being serious issues may I suggest you check out EcoTerr StabiliGrid, its a solid platic grid system and adds extra support (hold up more vehicle weight) and lateral stability (keeps stones in their place much longer) than just the textile alone since right now pieces can still get kicked around from the tires and the vehicles torque as it passes over. I have lived in places and dealt with rutting and scattering issues pertaining to gravel, just passing along some tips. Oh and if you got issues with the edges/sides you could dig a trench and infill, this would give it a foundation like that of what a building its on. and creates a trough for water run-off.
Most use 12 foot wide, nice work going with 15.

Here in Texas we put the base down first and the clean rock on top.

Over kill on the blocks and staples but the job looks amazing and was done the right way and should last a long time with little maintenance! 💪🏼🖤💯
Not sure if packing it down was in the plans but if not is a must to getting smoth long lasting driveway!

COME DO MINE NEXT!! 🤣🙏🏼

I wish Id put fabric down; never knew about it; gravel sinks into the ground, and its soon time to replace. Great pointers -- thanks !

That fabric is the best money you have ever spent!

How long was your road? What was the final cost of the road? If we have the first 2 payers done properly but have not done the last layer, and weeds took over really bad, can we just do the last layer? Or, do we have to redo it today to get the weeds out of it?
