Ali Velshi reports on the return to Earth of two Russian cosmonauts and an American astronaut from the International Space Station, and note that sanctions on Russia for its invasion of Ukraine could hurt Russia's space program and other terrestrial politics could further complicate traditionally neutral space.

I'll never understand people trying to OWN land...its a gift to us to use and honor just as space is. Greed needs to be shut down....lets evolve

Let me fix your headline: Nations not directly involved in a war should not get involved by placing sanctions or it could impact the ISS

This is why we can’t go into space. We would just take all our BS and greed and fighting to another planet and destroy it just the same.

The International Space Station is dependent upon the Russian Soyuz module to provide the necessary propulsion to maintain orbit. Without small but regular corrections the orbit of the ISS will decay and it will fall to earth and burn up. Dimitri from Roscosmos has already made threats indicating their ability not only to bring down the ISS by taking their rocket home, but by the timing of it could choose just where it will come down.
I don't doubt that NASA are currently in urgent talks with SpaceX, who are currently the only US outfit with the necessary technology to convey personnel and materials to and from the ISS and that could potentially be utilised to keep the Station on station, so to speak.
I don't think people are taking Dmitri's threats as anything more than rhetoric just now, but it does highlight the parlous state the US are in with their dependence upon Russia.

Please don't bring our petty fighting into space. Leave the border wars here on the ground!

Shades of MIR. We left an American and 2 Russians in space w limited O2 and no navigation system. They had to propel themselves to Earth w the moon as guide.

Thank God. Russians showed big heart. Otherwise Americans had lost their astronaut.
