Chill onions in the fridge. That’s what we did in culinary school as it cuts down on the fumes they release. Also, your eyes start burning too much from it just walk into the freezer for a few seconds and it will really help.

Wet sponge next to the chopping board. Doesn’t totally eliminate the problem but it really helps

I always cut them wearing my goggles. Never shed a tear since I put them in my kitchen drawer next to my cutting board. Feels like casting a protection spell.

How to avoid crying when cutting an onion: Don't breathe through your nose.
People often think it's because of the onion's gas/aroma mixing with the eye, but everything happens through the nose.

Don’t cut off the root when you slice or dice onions. Most of the stuff that makes your eyes burn are in the root.

I used chopped onions before my amateur billiards' tournaments, but it might had been a placebo, cause I also smoked cannabis before those too.
I was nasty opponent: smelling of onions, weed and beer.
