The biggest issue was the language gap. The soldiers couldn't speak the language but they could hand out gifts.

I loved this! You should consider doing more videos like this whenever you've got something to really rant about I'd definitely watch more

I actually just read about cargo cults this summer and found it fascinating. But really, we all do this to some extent. We think something is true and then we look around and take what we see and interpret it to reinforce our belief. I find the whole thing interesting - probably because my favorite question is why. lol

It actually makes you wonder if we aren't all practicing a form of misguided cargo cultism

If you’re interested in cargo cults, D&D, virtual reality, and a mystery adventure, read Dream Park by Larry Niven and Steven Barnes. It was written in 1981 (or so), won an award. And was an amazing look at how we might play games. It might be outdated in some ways - I read it long ago - but it we’re still not there technology-wise, but getting closer.

And that's how we got the Prime Directive.

Super interesting! I wasn't familiar with the Cargo Cult concept. It makes perfect sense why they would respond that way, it's also a little sad to imagine their plight. Thanks for sharing!

Fantastic raw ramble! I think that there are a lot of really interesting story ideas that can be toyed with if you purely consider the perspective of the native tribes. You could drum up any dozens of similarly inspired scenarios, and let the characters (and the audience) slowly come to the realization that they are suffering from Cargo Cult Thinking.

Thanks for this one! Don't hesitate to share such musings. I've been told I view the world askance but it's led me to some interesting ideas.

Loved this. Interesting, thought-provoking, and I feel like there's a novel idea (or 100) waiting to be explored. In short, I'm inspired! Don't wait for Mary to go on vacation again to do another one.

This reminds me of my own personal philosophy. The monotony of the day absolutely horrifies me so I've ascribed my own meaning to the Ouroboros. The snake eating it's own tail. What it means to me is that if you fall into these daily rituals and routines before you know it you've eaten yourself whole. So the Ouroboros reminds me to let go of my own tail and head in a new, and hopefully exciting direction.

There’s a show called Meet the Natives that’s somewhat related to this cargo cult stuff.

One of the main purposes of the show is to find the mythic figure 'Tom Navy' who once helped the islanders of Tanna.

I watched it recently and was really impressed by it.

Anybody else learn about cargo cults thanks to Larry Niven and Steven Barnes classic novel Dream Park?

Awesome video! This reminds me of Excel macros I used to create. Users would just click a button and let it do its magic, but if a bug occurred, they had no clue what to do!

This is why I prefer knowledge, investigation, experimentation over ignorance, blind faith, and 'tradition'.

Great little vid. I had heard about the concept before, but always to get a reminder. And, have to say this...love the shirt. Have the exact same kind, but in blue.
