Days after launching his invasion of Ukraine, Russian President Vladimir Putin put his strategic nuclear arsenal on high alert -- a warning to the west not to interfere. Analysts believe the risk of an all-out nuclear war is low. Instead, Putin might be tempted to use tactical nuclear weapons in Ukraine - smaller weapons designed to cause more limited devastation. How likely is that - and how would the west respond?

As awful and cynical it sounds, the cold hard truth is that the only thing, _the _*_only_*_ thing_ that has kept anybody from using nuclear weapons in war since Nagasaki is the prospect that if you launch one, everybody else will be scrambling for the "Launch All" button.

The problem is that Putin has talked about many things: sanctions, the existence of Ukraine as independent country, arming Ukraine, interfering in Ukraine, all as existential threats to Russia. Long before the war began the West has been called an existential threat to Russia, wanting to 'contain' and 'destroy it.' Putin's criteria has been met, according to himself, many times over. . There is a paranoid and expansionist aspect to Russian politics that is very different from the West's thinking.
