Video Notes:
Did you know that on February 11, 1845 the Lieutenant Governor who proclaimed the end of slavery in Tobago dies in office?

According to Susan Craig James’ The Changing Society of Tobago, today marks the 177th anniversary of the death of Lieutenant-Governor Major General Henry Charles Darling. Darling held this position for 12 years from 1833 to 1845. Prior to Major General Darling’s arrival, the top position in Tobago was called captain general or governor in chief. When Darling took office, it becamse Lieutenant Governor.

He was a Major General in the British Army before taking up the position of Lieutenant Governor in Tobago. He came from a family of servicemen. His father was a sergeant then lieutenant in the 45th Regiment of Foot. Darling’s brother was also a British Army officer who served as Governor of New South Wales. Additionally, Darling’s son, also served in the military and held several high positions in different colonies such as St. Lucia, Jamaica, Cape Colony, South Africa and Victoria in Australia.

Some of the most noteworthy occurrences happening in Tobago during Darling’s administration were his proclamation ending slavery in Tobago on July 25th 1834 as well as his proclamation announcing full freedom beginning August 1st 1838.

Another interesting tidbit about life in Tobago in the mid 1800s comes by way of Darling’s 1842 Blue Book report where he notes several instances of prominent white men marrying the most accomplished coloured women of Tobago society. In her other book the Evolution of Tobago Society, Craig details an example of this phenomenon included in Darling’s report about James Henry Keens who was a Police Magistrate and leading merchant. He married Frances Collier who was the daughter of James M Collier, a former Solicitor General who had his daughter, Frances, educated in England.
