There are several reason for smelly laundry. In no particular order they are:

1) Older HE manchines were not vented to allow them to dry out internally. This caused mold and mildew to grow inside. The only fix is to replace all rubber/soft components or replace the machine, as most people did/do. I believe there was a class action lawsuit or two.

2) not running the self cleaning cycle often enough.

3) Using too much detergent and/or not washing on the correct cycle. I.E. always using the quick wash.

4) Overloading the machine and/or loading it to max capacity with heavily soiled items.

5) not hanging towels to dry and/or not using the appropriate detergent and/or using the wrong wash cycle.

6) too much/too frequent use of liquid fabric softener. Build up in the machine and a buildup in fabrics. Its likely fragrance beads have the same effect on machines and clothes. Afterall to get the fragrance to remain on the clothes residue must remain. I never use any perfumed detergents or softeners. There is nothing worse than getting in an elevator with someone smelling of chemicals and synthetic flowers. No man enjoys smelling like this. lay off the laundry fragrances. It's nauseating. Trying to mask odors only draws more attention to the fact your clothing smells. I personally travel with my own sheets when visiting family and friends.

Despite the false claims of the presenter vinegar does breakdown and remove detergent and fabric softener build up. Cleaning your machine regularly and adding vinager to each load will remove residue. If you need to get rid of odors and residue right away (before my next visit), soak the sheets and towels in the bathtub with a vinegar mixture before laundering with fragrance and dye free detergent and softener. Clothing should not smell like anything. That said occasionally I add a few drops of essential oil to the dryer balls to ADD a seasonal scent to the sheets I use. I'm not masking or competing with bad odors.

Cheers!

I’m thinking if washing machines worked liked they used to, most people wouldn’t be having this problem.

Is this only for use in the USA? Whatever the secret ingredient is or special washing product is it country specific or some special washing detergent that will cost a fortune on subscription only available in the USA sort of thing?
