Kings and queens continue to play an important role in modern-day Africa. Charged with preserving their society's cultures, they remain figureheads for many of Africa's 1.3 billion inhabitants. In this series, the Austrian art historian and photographer Alfred Weidinger journeys to Africa to explore the ancient customs of the African kingdoms. The three-part documentary introduces the viewer to a spectacular unknown world, a world that may soon become a thing of the past. In this episode, the team attends what may be the last-ever coronation of a Hogon, a spiritual leader, in Mali.
The fascinating three-parter is an attempt of an adventurer with a passion for people and art to explore the battle between traditional and modern ways of life, and to celebrate the similarities shared by people across the world.

From Elizabeth II to Cleopatra, Real Royalty peels back the curtain to give a glimpse into the lives of some of the most influential families in the world, with new full length documentaries posted every week covering the monarchies of today and all throughout history.

This documentary is so crucial in every aspect socially, politically, geographically, and psychologically. This needs to be saved in a museum in West Africa for the descendants and diaspora people who need to learn about Africa to its core.

What a terrific idea! Thank you for sharing. We too often get caught up in our own lives and forget about other parts of the world. I enjoyed the video very much.

There are princes in Europe also, and some places still have kings and queens. I have always known what Africa possesses in this manner but it's good to learn something everyday. It's exciting.
But then Africa is actually the richest continent and the ability to be the richest people in the world. God will bless the population with wisdom to use it. ❤

Living in "mud huts" does not make someone poor. It makes them in tune with their surroundings and environment. Concrete is not suitable or sustainable for very hot climates. The materials they use keeps the homes cool during the day and warm at night when it may be very cool. Also, I'm tired of these documentaries immediately starting off with calling people poor. It's rude and it's wrong when you're not explaining why. It's propaganda to keep saying that without explaining who exactly has their wealth. This documentary and the comments of the host is so old school.

This documentary is so insightful, educational, and impactful. Indeed, West Africa is filled with rich history and heritage. I believe the next gen will adapt and continue with their rich history, Africa has much to offer.

Wow. I saw the hogon's living quarters in Ende back in 2000 (although I didn't get to meet him), just looking at my pictures now as this video brought back great memories. & went to the Cure Salee in 2021. I so love this part of the world, and hope that the cultures there can be maintained.

I disagree the Continent is "poor!" If that were so COLONIZERS WOULD NOT BE THERE! The First People are abused by those who strip the soil of its riches, and everything beneath the surface. Pres. Traore is making vast changes in Burkina Faso 🇧🇫 that benefit the PEOPLE, not just the powerful. Again the Continent is not poor, otherwise the carpetbaggers -- the Chinese, Russians, Dutch, French, British, America, etc. -- wouldn't be invading this fascinating, mysterious 😊and amazing Continent!

It's so cool, but there's the sadness of a fading society. Thank goodness it's being documented! ❤😊❤

It is derogatory to call African Religion animism.

Cardinal Francis Arinze, a Nigerian Catholic leader, in his recent book, advises Europeans and Africans to discontinue the use of the term.

It is incorrect and derogatory. The correct terms are African Religion or African Traditional Religion.

The Dogon Religion should be classified and described as such.

The photographer has done some good work. However, a lot of his comments are heavy on European colonialism.

It would help if he could reflect on this.
