Part of getting good at fighting games is understanding that it's not always your turn. Not all mashing is "mashing, " if you catch my drift. The people who do it well are doing it very intentionally.

This is a super underrated topic that should be explored more. The problem is not getting out of hand, the problem is understanding the proper punishment. The same concept exists in all combat sports.

This is true for pretty much any fighting game. What separates the serious players from noobs is the ability to read and counter your opponent. If they button mash, it makes them predictable and easier to punish.

Oh I love mashers. You can almost sense the panic when you caught on to their BS and punish them properly. Same with flowcharters.

tekken is mashy because it's a knowledge check due to movelists being huge with such a variety of wacky and fun characters, but with that said just mashing can be fun for a new player because it does work early on.
you can know how tekken works and how your character works but still get beat by someone mashing if you don't know their character.

I just started playing Tekken for the first time. Coming from Guilty Gear, the different input system is rough on me and I often feel like I am mashing just trying to string normals together.

I am still new to Tekken 8, i main Reina. When the opponent is all over you like that, you do f+1+2, she does this head stomb that will throw him away.
Again, i'm still new to Tekken 8 so there could be better moves 😨

I just rush them down with jab and df1 and bait the mash out with sidestep. If they start reading the sidestep I just stuff it out because I made them change their defense time.

(This doesn't work sometimes because sidestepping will always be a read)

it's not mashing your opponent realizes what you can't handle, your lack of knowledge is the issue

in the past, combos used to be like 6 buttons not 2 or 3 lol, i was brung up with those old school methods an theres a reason they work. if it dont work then the game doesnt allow it for some reason.... this is going by mortal kombat tho
