When ultraviolet sunlight hits our skin, it affects each of us differently. Depending on skin color, it’ll take only minutes of exposure to turn one person beetroot-pink, while another requires hours to experience the slightest change. What’s to account for that difference, and how did our skin come to take on so many different hues to begin with? Angela Koine Flynn describes the science of skin color.

Lesson by Angela Koine Flynn, animation by Tomás Pichardo-Espaillat.

I wish everyone knew about this. But instead people are just out there judging others by their skin color.

I learned this when i was 9 years old.

I cant believe how people didn't learn this all their life.
And blame humans.

It’s crazy because skin colour should be celebrated for the impressive ability of our bodies to mutate and adapt to different environments

My skin color has drastically changed since my birth. My mom doesn't like that I have darker skin tone than before she keeps asking me to use home remedies and I am tired of her racism against my skin.

It absorbs light, but it certainly does not reflect character

I felt that one. I always get teased of my dark skin. That phrase boosted my confidence❤

Beautifully explained! I am a brown skinned biology student who studied evolution. And man, I am overly proud of my melanin concentration. It's one of the best examples of evolutionary adaptation of humankind.

Pretty pathetic that these adaptations are what our ancestors fought and hated each other over. Pretty pathetic that tons of people are still hating and discriminating against people with darker skin when it's literally an adaptation to protect us from the sun...
