In this video I discuss helpful tips when thinking about training a medication reminder or medication alert and a medication retrieve for your service dog. This service dog task can be useful for a variety of disabilities including various psychiatric service dogs (MDD, ADHD, PTSD etc.) as well as diabetic alert dogs, and any other disabilities that require medication either at a particular time every day or during a medical event. The reminder can be taught separately and used to help you remember things like eating, taking a walk, taking a shower etc. The medication retrieve can also be taught as a separate task.

I want to teach the reminder, and possibly retrieve. I am terrible at taking meds. I avoid taking them, and put it off. It would be helpful to train my dog to be insistent with reminders, and retrieve if I’m not getting up to get it.

Mainly here to look into because therapist thought might be helpful for reminder, but likely won't do either because:
1. Morning medication that supposed to be taking first thing in the morning (0725) have been successfully remembering daily at least by 1000 and not 2nd guessing whether did or not like did before and forgot as late as 1200 (mark when I take medication so sure since memory loss)
2. Nightly medication that supposed to take 30 minutes prior to sleep, I have also been doing good job with, and forgetting is quickly obvious as even with medication have some issues
3. Weekly medication, I'm not sure if I can train her for that, but been doing decent with that.
4. None of my medications are "critical" and missing them won't kill me (though I shouldn't be missing though)

On retrieval, I have mobility issues, but it's more so limitations and makes me unable to do stuff i want or work, getting medication is not a problem.

thank you for sharing.

I have an app that will incessantly remind me so much that I'll take them to shut it off. Though this could still be helpful when it comes to retrieval, though I'd have to take them out of the metal pencil case in order to let him pick it up.

Most definitely. I’ve had a liver transplant. I’ve forgotten LOADS of times, it beginning to take a toll on my new liver. I’ve tried setting a timer, put notes on the doors, etc…

Both, by the way, you are right on about how easy it is to miss a med.

Whoa! My dog isn't a service dog, but it would still be fabulous if he could learn to do this!

My English mastiff has decided he needs to alert me to take my meds. He will wake me to get me up..to take my morning meds. Lol! He pops my pillow under head till I speak. He will continue this till I actually sit up. I never taught him this either.

Can’t wait to teach my dog this. I’ve already trained her to retrieve my glasses in the morning and she now brings them without a cue as I’ve accidentally reinforced that I get up when she gives them to me haha

Well, I need another source of reminder . NOt only remind me to take meds, but remind me that i have to get to an appointment . notes, calendars around the house as well as calendars on my phone and in the tasks list .. just IS NOT working. Would something like this be possible? I live with chronic post Tbi symptoms. After 20 year since my car accident and 4 years after major set back that came on during the pandemic. Today I am finally having to accept my reality .. I have not wanted to give into until this last major health set back. On the bright side > I now for the first time have my very own personalized team of 8 TBI specialists. I do not currently have a Service Dog. But am considering it .

My dog is 1 and is super anxious; but almost everything else is coming second nature to him. He doesnt eat in public: wont even take a treat from me, keeps attention to me(and my mother who i think hes worried will fall) staying close even when the lead is dropped, has barely any prey drive, and keeping my six...

I just need to start spot training with retrieve, a proper stay heel, and the not being nervous around people and loud sounds

I feel like too if i use reminders or timers or anything for my medication, it feels more like a job than just an every day thing. It’s almost like when you need to go to work school, you have to go maybe you just don’t want to it’s same thing with my medication.

I’m very bad at taking my medication. I will be teaching my girl to do reminders as my meds are in a dispenser which she can’t retrieve. Thanks for having a video on this! Your channel is soo helpful for self training while dealing with a disability!

I’ve taught my SD Skidboot to pick up dropped items and retrieve items such as my meds bag, water bottle, phone, or whatever else I need.
I’ve been diagnosed with three vestibular disorders due to multiple head trauma, so bending down when I am dizzy can be dangerous. Skidboot bringing me my emergency meds when I can’t get out of my chair due to dizziness is life saving.
Super useful tasks.
