Why VR Contact Lenses Will Replace VR Headsets Soon

In this video, I'll zoom in on the biggest technological barriers to developing VR contact lenses, explore the current state of such developments, and discuss when they may finally become a reality!

This is a very different video from what I usually make, but I really enjoyed working on it! I'm a bit of a research nerd (hello, PhD), and I love digging into weird topics like this one and finding answers to tough and obscure questions. The VR/AR contact lenses topic has been on my mind for a while! And I finally looked into it and decided to share my findings with you :) Hope you'll enjoy it, and let me know if you enjoy this type of videos so that I know if I should be making more of them in the future!

I usually would say nope to putting anything into my eye. Until I think about having full FOV, I would put something in my eye if it gives me full FOV in VR. Seeing your periphery is so under appreciated but adds so much immersion.

This was such a cool video. This reminded me very much of an interview BigThink did with Michio Kaku about 10 years ago.

Back then, it sounded like outright fiction, bordering on magic. But here we are (or close-ish). Like Arthur C Clark famously said, “… any sufficiently advanced technology, is indistinguishable from magic”.

This also runs somewhat adjacent to an AMA Shane Harris did in Banter about a month ago about the possibility that within the next decade, we’re likely going to have a proper Gen1 Holodeck. VR contacts would absolutely be a massive leap forward to those ends.

In any case, awesome video. Thanks for geeking/nerding out and sharing it!

Not sure about AR contact lenses, but for people with dementia having the names of people and their relationship to the AR device wearer projected onto the environment might provide a significant quality of life improvement...

Great video! I think I'd rather have a pair of true AR glasses though ngl. I dont wanna have to put something in my eye every day.

Also, is there an issue with the volume levels or is it just my headphones being weird?

Nice video. I've been follow the lenses vr/ar technology for I think 6 or 7 years now. It's super intressthing.

A fascinating deep dive on the subject. Thank you!

I think we also need to consider disposability. These lenses have to be cheap enough that they can be replaced fairly regularly.

Personally I’m not sure how I’d feel about contacts and I’m definitely an early adopter. I’d probably stick with the glasses or I’d go all in and get an ocular implant.

I don't even like normal contact lenses. But this was a nice informative video.

Great concept- As a daily glasses/contacts and VR user, sign me up!

Cool idea but how about they just make it so when you enter your iPad you can also put in your lens prescription and walla no add on needed

I have extreme eyes pain every day I'm never putting this in my eyes while hair hurts. But if they can make it this small then just make very light glasses

I would be happy with something the size of metas current glasses.

I think the next step is vr smart glasses not vr lenses

I think body heat or solar energy might be ideal for lenses

I believe that in 10 years we will be able to have these ocular devices, that is only for a select group of people since it will be high cost.

I'm skeptical that mojovision had a working prototype that matched the claims they were making. There's lots of companies that overpromise or exaggerate to maintain funding.

A genuinely practical version of this is multiple decades away imo, if it's ever even truly possible to achieve everything you'd want in XR in such a small form factor in reality. Some basic AR overlays is all fine and dandy, but that's really not the "VR" dream for this kind of tech that we've been promised in sci-fi movies for decades. I think around normal glasses size but with slightly thicker frames really is the most realistic form factor to focus on and look forward to from XR within our lifetimes. And I think that will be genuinely brilliant and more than ideal for most people. And those I would and indeed will absolutely wear.

we will use lenses to enhance VR glasses field of view before we will see this type of augmentation. power/charging could be done wirelessly because the frames of these glasses are close enough to the contact lenses for this to work.
the real future will be eye tracking and led lasers that track your eyes.. this actually already exists and has been showcased at display week. but i am talking about a device you place on your coffee table and it tracks not just your eyes but everyone's eyes in the room and it casts literal holographic imagery in your pupils.
now imagine this technology in the hands of the enemy on the battlefield and you start seeing things that aren't real.

I think I would have reached my limit if you planted something in my brain.
