Odd rule call for LLWS 2016. Dead ball. How many bases?

Where should the runners be placed? An umpire kills the play prematurely and doesn't place runners where the commentators think he should.

A previously uploaded video asked you to "Make the Call" on a play during the 2016 Little League World Series when the umpire killed the play calling time.

Since that upload I have had the opportunity to communicate with an umpire that was on the field during this play and he explained what really happened. Watch to find out and comment below your thoughts on the situation.

So, inadvertent whistle. If umpires had whistles.

Ump messed up, but the catcher had ZERO chance of getting the runner going to 2nd.

I agree they made right call. If umpire screwed up and called dead ball, everything freezes! That's what they did here. If a runner was on his way to a base he got it. No further advances.

Two base time-of-pitch award, as this was NOT the first attempt to retire a runner by an infielder. R2 scores, R1 to 3rd, BR to 2nd. Very easy.

Some schools I umpire have the ground rule that a ball is just declared dead when it hits the nets instead of the fence. Clarify this at your plate meeting because some play it live off the net. Great vid.

I love that you got the update to this and that it makes sense given what happened.

Thank you for the update. An unfortunate situation, but luckily neither side was harmed by the call.

The umpire at second is super close to being in the way if the guy at first decides to go for third. Why can't he make the call from outside?

For all of us umpires watching, take this as a learning expirence. Yes, it didnt really honestly change the out come. THIS TIME. Remember to take a breath before you make a call. The last out I called yesterday, is still out. The last Foul, is still foul. Take your time.

Yup, it happens, umps mistakenly kill plays from time to time. Re-watching the play it probably would have ended up with those runners at 2nd and 3rd anyway if umpire had not stopped play. Baseball karma.

Right call he would have gone to second on the throw to home

Correct placement based on the call. Since it is the first play by outfielder and it has gone out of play according to umpire baserunners get 2 bases from time of pitch
