In this video you will learn all the science for this topic to get a grade 9 or A* in your science exams!
Bacteria show genetic variation, some have high resistance to antibiotics, some have a medium resistance to antibiotics, and others have low resistance to antibiotics. When you have a bacterial infection, the doctor will prescribe antibiotics, which kill the bacteria. However, if you don’t finish the course of antibiotics, you might only kill the low and medium resistant bacteria, leaving the high resistance bacteria to breed. When the high resistance bacteria divide, they pass on their beneficial genetic variation, and now all the bacteria have a high resistance to the antibiotic you were prescribed. This is how antibiotic resistance can take place.
