Gonna throw in a couple tips that may seem like common knowledge or could be a bit more complex.

1. Build your sustains. Being dead is the worst possible loss in DPS. All limited sustains are very strong and will absolutely keep you from dying (unless you get 1 shot by something like the SimU/DivU max diff elites.) Also shoutout to Gallagher who is currently best sustain on break based teams (and arguably debuff dependent teams too) while being a 4*
2. Just like YTber said, the supports are crucial to your game experience. Building a couple of them will benefit multiple different teams. At present, all 5* supports and a decent number of 4*s (if not all) are all between good to super strong in terms of value to the team. 100% build your 5* supports. Robin Sparkle Ruan Mei Silverwolf Harmony Trailblazer, all of them are worth getting up. HOWEVER, you may not have the ability to wait on all your supports being built. so the next point comes into play

3. Some of us have 'Favourites' in game. While it is generally better to use 'meta' units as a f2p, it may be a little hard to stay on top of the changing meta considering the content will generally always be geared to shiny new unit. I recommend picking 2-3 of your favourite Dpses and building your account around them while ignoring other dpses until the team(s) are done.
3.5 (yapping) Looking at the past 'top' teams we've gone through in just Penacony, we've had DoT rise to the top following Black Swans release, followed by Hypercarry based teams boosted by Sparkle. Literally the following banner we get a new team comp in Acheron Hypercarry, which is different from the 'classic' Hypercarry team due to preferring Nihility units over Harmony spam. Right after that we get Aventurine and Robin, who greatly improved Follow up Attack teams. Then all of a sudden a 5th Team rises to the top in Break with the help of either Boothill or Firefly. Each of those teams have drastically different DPSes, and while they mostly share supports, you may have a hard time keeping up as a f2p

4. Look up build guides. What does each unit want and what do they not need. Look at traces, and determine what is wanted, and what is not needed. For supports generally, their skill, ult, and talents should be levelled as high as possible (10 at e0), while the basic attack should be left alone. Sometimes, you run into units like Pela or Harmony Trailblazer, who you don't need to fully max their traces. Pela and Harmony Trailblazer have functions that make things like their skill trace level not relevant. Pela is generally a pure debuffer, not used as a sub dps, resulting in her damaging traces (stuff like Atk or Ice dmg bonus) being generally lower priority. Harmony Trailblazer specialises in superbreak, which doesn't use Talent Atk Multipliers for their damage, and use the Fixed toughness gauge damage of the attack, meaning levelling her Skill and Basic would contribute negligible amounts of damage.

5. Look up guides on how to use (if not optimise) units (they may not be in the same video as the general guide that covers their kit and build). Sometimes a unit could be complex enough that you may not be properly utilising all they can offer. From stuff like not using Jingliu's ult while she's not in her enhanced state, to stuff like only using Robin ult after the slowest ally has taken their turn to maximise the action advance. Sometimes this is the reason why you may think that a unit is not as good as people advertise. (anecdote: I had a guy think Acheron was overrated and showed himself playing her on Dual Dps with Dhil TY and Luocha. Admittedly i think this is more of a dude didn't read vs not understanding finer details, but it was kinda funny)

6. When relic farming, prioritise caverns/worlds that offer the most 'efficiency'. The more units/sets you farm for at once, the most likely you are to get pieces that are useful. My example is DU World 9. Forge of Kalpagni Lantern is the best planar set for most of the Firefly led Break team. Duran Dynasty of Running Wolves is a super strong set for units that do damage with Follow up Attacks (or like being in a team with Follow up Attackers) So in farming World 9, I am farming for my Firefly, Harmony Trailblazer, Gallagher, Dr Ratio, Topaz, Aventurine, Clara, Herta, Himeko (and Jade if I was pulling for her)
6.5. In a similar vein, avoid farming relics that only go on 1 unit unless you are fully aware of the opportunity cost and committed to the unit you are trying to build. Hunter of Glacial Frost (ice set) is technically JL's Best in Slot (unless fighting Quantum weak enemies using 4pc Genius of Brilliant Stars), but the domain may be considered low efficiency for you because you only want that Ice set and you don't want wind set. Or how World 6 has Inert Salsotto, one of the best Planar sets for Ult based units, but shares the world with Belobog of the Architects, which is generally a more undesirable set.

7. Misc stuff like Resource management. Don't spend Embers, Starlight, and Herta Bonds freely. you should plan for how you want to use those. Save enough Embers to buy out the passes every month. Save Starlight to buy a 5* standard light cone. Buy and superimpose the Herta store Light Cones.
7.5. I hope this is obvious, but as f2p you should never use Stellar Jades on the standard banner.

8. Try and have fun. If you are stressed about doing stuff like I mentioned above, then just stop doing that and do what you enjoy.

don't tell me you skipped ruan mei twice

A few extra thing to add:

1- don't feel pressure into using a specific relic set, yes, clara's best set is 4pc physical BUT it's his not worth farming because it's niche and the other set in the cavern is mid AND it's only slightly better than something like 4pc longevous or 2pc 2pc ashblaze and physical dmg. And even then if you don't have really good pieces on these set it's fine to not use a set, it's better to have really good pieces off set than mid pieces on set (except for a few exception where the set is really strong, I believe you'll be able to realise that but if you can't, ask me)

2- value crit rate and crit damage correctly, first of all it is not the only damage upgrade, attack% is a really important stat that can be as important as crit, it is even more important when you're not at the point where you can get a decent amount of crit rate and damage. Do not undervalue crit rate or crit dmg either, being able to crit 100% might sound like a greater damage boost but if your crit only deal 50% more damage that's not a crazy upgrade, inversely it is useless to have really high crit dmg if your crit rate is low. even more on character like Seele, Dhil or dr ratio else you'll be restarting the battle a lot because you accidentally dealt 3k damage with your main dps.

3- build around characters, I know that a lot of character look attractive and you might want all of them but you'll have a better time if you pick accordingly to who you have. Do you like playing kafka? consider getting ruan mei or blackswan, do you like playing seele? consider getting sparkle... it will take a while to complete your teams with the right characters but it is worth it.

4- don't feel pressured into pulling for a character. Yes acheron does crazy damage but she is not needed to clear any of the content so it wouldn't be "a waste" to skip her. Yes aventurine does great sustain but if you already have 2 good sustain you're fine. HOWEVER consider character that might enable your active characters. You don't HAVE to pull for ruan mei but if you play firefly it would really help you, you don't have to pull for kafka but if you play blackswan it would also help a lot.

5- have fun i'm just some random guy online don't listen to everything i say

I'd say the biggest brick of your account is not having the selfie that Kafka sends you in one of the dialogue options.

I would think you should build up your sustains and DPS first no? They're on the edge of your team usually and are taking the most hits (unless Tingyun who is often memed as always getting hit). A lot of the time the supports have some niche which doesn't require a lot of building. For example, a Pela with Resolution Shines as Pearls of Sweat she's going to be doing the Defense down as a set debuff. Tingyun too, her ult will always do a fixed amount of energy regen and damage boost. Also your last point, pull who you like, you can beat the entire end game without pulling if you want.

(Fun comes first and formost but people play the game for different reasons and someone already posted a lot of useful things, this is a continuation of that list, if you care to read. This is from a F2P POV and assuming you understand the game at least some what)

PLAN EVERYTHING! I've consistently gotten every 5 star I've wanted (all the while anticipating and compensating for lost 50/50s which I have done many times now) because I'd plan the moment the drip marketing comes out and I've decided they are it. Now, you can make the argument for if they are meta characters or not or valuable for your account, fair and you don't have to look at leaks either to get their kits just deciding upon their style would you want them? BUT I don't want to hear that for a rerun character like RUAN "THE GOAT" MEI! There are already many guides and justification for a character you should pull. If you truly want to have a strong account you should pull for meta and if you do so planning is the first step.

Second is to actually spend time on them and watch vids if you're confused, like guide makers or just search up how to build them.

Third, this is a TEAM based game so build out one and even if they are mid in investment, they will still clear most if not all content because of their synergy that you should account for when making a team (watch the guides)

Fourth, The Simulated Universe is a early game account's best friend you can cheeze the shish out of it with mostly free characters and watching guides for rememberance/preservation paths. A lot of us week 1 were able to clear all the worlds and their difficulties which we could reach to unlock for out lvl and that's with 1.0 characters, the powercreep is there so utilize them for an easier time than us.

Sixth, now if you already have a account with characters, but they are bad, look at what you've upgraded, nearly every character wants their ult, and skill up with some liking their talent but nearly all (besides Black Swan, Imbibitor Lunae and Blade) don't want their basics leveled. Unlock your major traces (and watching a few guides on which smaller ones because they can sometimes be near useless) cuz nearly all of them are important to enable them to do things better or completly change their kits. Pre-farm the update before, or if they aren't released yet farm character/LC/credits necesary to lvl them. You don't NEED to max them out, just lvl to 70 out of 80 with 8/8/8 for talents, all major traces unlocked (some/all minors) and their LC fully leveled.

Seventh, any character you have are the best characters. Unless you know you are able to get a 5 star (and don't even think aabout banking on getting a 4 star), you shouldn't assume you can get better any time soon, work with what you have and build from there. Event LCs are one time thing once they are gone they are done but if you managed to snag Tutorial you win the game with any nihility character. If you have a Pela, you are lucky cuz she can be slapped onto ANY team and be game changing (early game took me from using 10 cycles to 6 in one instance). You are building what you have and then playing the waiting game for better substitutes or to fill that hole in your team and invest into characters knowing you aren't replacing them in less that 3 updates (good benchmark for character's self life).

Never gacha for Eidolon's thinking they are better than more characters early into your account, LCs are the same. Only consider it if you truly love that character, you've played for a long time and want to vertically invest in a team so they can clap everything, and watch vids for E1 vs S1, it will get you the most bang for your jades or comparisons of Eidolons to see a good stopping point and I don't need to tell you what to do if you just E6 S1 or S5, that's dedication as F2P and I respect tf out of it!

And lastly, actually play the game, if you've got no interest then theirs no reason to play, it's a game, but if you do care about the game and beating the content you have to put the time in.

You can check recommended subs and everything by going into your phone (in-game) then to game tools

One thing I would suggest is DO NOT get damage traces on supports until you don't have anything else to upgrade

5:05 or so. Why don't you use Gallagher's Lightcone on him instead of the Quid Pro Quo you are using on him? I know it is level one or it was at the time of the video but it literally meant for him and goes well with him. A good investment.
