Here is something I find uniquely German. When you go to the doctor's office, you enter the waiting room and announce loudly, Guten Tag. Then you sit in absolute silence for 20 minutes...and when you leave you must loudly say, "Auf Wiedersehn!"

Ich bin Schottin und lebe auf den Orkney-Inseln, und ich öffne regelmäßig die Fenster. Frische Luft ist sehr wichtig, auch wenn es draußen kalt ist! Auf Orkney ist es oft sehr windig, aber ich versuche, das Fenster zumindest ein paar Minuten lang zu öffnen.

"Mahlzeit" sometimes has an additional meaning. If a German greets you with "Mahlzeit" already in the morning it means: "Good morning, but you are 5 minutes late". Don't take it serious!

Rachel’s German is amazing! I had no idea she wasn’t German at first 😱 🎉👌 She even looks like a friendly, cheerful German and slips in the occasional English word or phrase when speaking, which some native Germans do, too … very authentic ! 😮

When you stretch and emphases the "Nicht" and then "schlecht", this is quite the best compliment you can get.

I never heard of a European being surprised by "Kippfenster". I'm from Poland and we had those for like 20-30 years (since the fall of the communism in 1989). It's always the Americans, Canadians or people from South America, Africa or Asia who who get their minds blown away by this.

Bringing a cake for your own birthday is the same in Poland too! At school we bring candy for the whole class when its our birthday :)

Ich war einmal in Deutschland. Ich fuhr mit der S-Bahn und wusste nicht, wo ich aussteigen sollte. Und da war eine Frau, die es bemerkte, mich fragte und mir dann den Weg zeigte. Eine solche Bereitschaft habe ich nirgendwo anders erlebt.

I live in New Zealand and bringing a cake to work on your birthday, opening beer bottles with random objects, and giving understated compliments are very common Kiwi things to do! Complaining is definitely not a thing though, and we don't need to open our windows much because our houses are drafty and badly insulated so the wind is coming in already 😂

Yes, "Mahlzeit" and "Feierabend" are those words where foreigners need getting used to when they come to Germany

Damp and mildew is such a problem in the UK because we are absolutely TERRIFIED of letting our expensive heat out of the house, so everything is closed up tight and the condensation is a nightmare. I had war with my father through my teenage and adult years because I was sick of the damp and mildew. Most teenagers fight for their right to go to parties- I was fighting for my right to sleep with a bloody window open or to open the kitchen window. I thoroughly approve of making it a policy to ventilate four times a day.

I like your system of showing the written German large and under it the meaning in English in small letters. I am first born of German parents in the US. I should practice my German more. Conversationally, I am ok in German. However my writing and reading could improve. Thanks, good channel!

The cake thing we do in Portugal too! We bring cake for the whole class and we bring little treats, like gummies for each student. And at work we bring either a cake or some desert and we eat it after lunch!

As I understand it, the birthday cake thing has a different thought behind: You do not bring your own birthday cake... you would like to invite people to your birthday to celebrate with them - but it's a weekday and you all have to work. So you just bring the cake to work and eat it with your colleagues 🎉 and cake is just easier to prepare than a lunch for all 😂 so its coffee and cake
