My mom used to say that a perfect dress is when the next day every one remembers that you looked amazing, but no one can remember the details of your dress. I've always followed that advice.

My mother sewed, she shopped the Goodwill and she watched out for bargains. We had little money, I had few clothes, but I remember being the best dressed wherever I went. I love quality clothing.

I bought a Ralph Lauren black heavy cotton cable turtleneck sweater back in 1999 and still have it no snags no fading.

I am cleaning out my closet and I’m going to build a wardrobe with basic classic pieces a little at a time.

My dad always told me about old money versus new and said old money is always understated and not flashy or gauche. He also told me to leave something to the imagination. Therefore, I try to dress modestly with taste.

I'm 86 and have always followed these premises. I was criticized but held to my ideals. Not wealthy but discerning.

No piercings at all except ears. No tattoos ever.

My mom used to say Classic attire never fades because it’s not a trend or a fad. If you wear jewelry, make sure you don’t overdo it. The whole point is understatement in fashion is better. And my mom was told she looked very regal.

Tailoring is going to be my watch word I have gone from a size 26 to an 18 on carnivore. I have 60 more pounds to go and being able to now choose clothes rather than settling for what fits means that being tailored will make it all look better. I love the tips to help me build a well put together look I can be proud of. Thank you,

I am 65, follow most of these rules. I love to coordinate scarves and classic accessories. But my heart does go out to hot pink and animal print 😊

I've always dressed like this, but not because I am trying to look like anything. I just appreciate quality fabrics, and my style is kind of boring and timeless. The bonus is that I still have a lot of clothing from 20+ years ago that I still wear. I absolutely love cashmere, so I buy 1 or 2 pieces every year or 2 on black friday. Quality clothing just feels better and fits better.
Of course, every so often I will buy something trendy, but I won't spend much money on it because I know I'm only going to wear it a few times.

I'm not an old money person by any means, I go for classic timeless pieces that can last me a good couple of years or as we say here "battle horses". I work with people, I am the face of my job so even if I'm dead beat tired or feeling lazy, I must look all put together and neat. I'm picky with colours because not all of them fit my skin tone and undertone well. I do use the colour palette you suggested but with a few changes: I wear a darker and cooler shade than the classic beige, dark green and red. Whenever my spirits are low, I wear red and it's like an instant boost up.

You don't need a lot of money to look good and you don't need 'old money' whatever that is. I buy most of my clothing second hand off ebay and I stick to classic labels like Burberry, Jaegar, Givenchy, Dior and so on. Classic fashion never goes out of style and it doesn't cost a fortune either.

Just wear whatever you feel happy in, and stop worrying about what other people think, Judge people by their attitude not by their appearance 👌

I don't care what anyone says, I like prints and bright colors...and I get compliments... clothes should suit your personality (I'm not "boring")...Yet, I don't wear tight or tasteless clothing...

On a minor note: my father got a car from a dealer and they put the dealer logo on the car. He said "take it off unless you are going to pay me for advertising for you". I was just a kid but I remember that and to this day, I despise "logo" clothing.

Of course real money does not care and wears whatever they want. Plenty of women wear big statement pieces with plain clothes but the real confidence comes from wearing what you want and owning it. This and having impeccable manners😊

TLDR version so you won't waste 10 minutes of your time.
1. no logo to flaunt
2. no overly trendy items
3. no cheap synthetic (polyester, acrylic) fabric
4. no loud colors or prints (not about commanding attention, it's about inspiring admiration)
5. no overly revealing clothing (less is more)
6. no flashy jewelry
7. no poorly fitting clothes
8. no overdone makeup or hair

I also don't like the 'old money women' idea. Old money does not make someone elegant. Elegance comes out of within, authenticity sincerity, not something superficial. I see this video as a guide to express your inner elegance. One can dress elegantly as much as she wants (here all models are women), but if she doesn't have empathy, grace, humility, her elegant clothes are nothing but a shadow of snobby 'old money'.
