It's profound and light at the same time - something very few classical novels manage to achieve. My favourite novel of all time. As a young general practitioner myself, Lydgates' struggles in a provincial medical system with its obscure hierarchies, scepticism to innovation and anachronistic practices offer an additional source entertainment and wisdom for me.

Thank you for this video. I have read most of her books but not Middlemarch, definitely next on the list. I visited her grave in Highgate and felt overwhelmed and emotional, you can really “see” her when reading her books.

I read "Silas Marner" as a teen and loved it, but haven't been able to finish any other George Eliot novel. I'm not sure why.

I DNF'd Middlemarch the first 2 times I picked it up. I ended up fully reading it in 2015 and LOVED it. I am going to re read it in March of this year. I am very much looking forward to immersing myself in this world again :)

Nice personal review of this book. I am 67 and French by birth, but have read mostly English books all my adult life. When I finished Middlemarch last year, having never to that point read it nor any work by George Eliot (Mary Anne Evans), I realized this was one of the finest novels I will ever have had the pleasure of reading in my life. I am now enjoying Adam Bede, and intend on discovering all her books at some point. Reading her is like being close to Mary Evans, who possessed and trained such an intelligent, fascinating mind.
