I once saw Foghat at a brewery. They openedd the show with Slow Ride, did another version in the middle of the set, then closed the show with it. They played 7 songs.

The only caveat to this whole discussion is you didn't have a manager or label that screwed you out of royalties. Or another band in the case of The Rolling Stones who totally torpedoed The Verve w/ Bittersweet Symphony. Sad thing is the Stones themselves had ripped off that piece of music too. But they had a good shyster in their corner. 30+ years later The Verve finally got the rights back but after how much lost revenue?
