THE KNIFE EDGE

"When you’re constantly seeking to go beyond your comfort zone, to do things that nobody has ever done before, sometimes the outcome balances on a knife edge" Dan Atherton

Gee Atherton’s 'The Knife Edge' is not the glossy action sports edit that we’ve come to know of late. In fact very little has been edited here, so while we get to enjoy the mind-blowing mountain-biking skills and the daring that we associate with Gee’s recent big mountain projects such as 'The Ridgeline' and 'The Slateline', he also talks of the fear he needs to overcome and shows the horrific crash that resulted in many broken bones, a punctured lung and a 2 week stay in the hospital.

Gee explains why he chose to share such a raw piece of footage and why he feels it’s important that we don’t shy away from the less glamorous side of extreme sports.

Spectacular action and personal reflections from one of the world's toughest and most accomplished mountain-bikers.

Huge thanks to the crew, to the paramedics, Aberdyfi Search and Rescue team, the Air Ambulance who transferred Gee to the hospital and the surgeons at the Royal Stoke University Hospital. Gee is making a rapid recovery without lasting damage.

Any profits from this film will be donated to the rescue services.

Filmed by @wearepeny.
Drone work by Eastwood Media and Tiny House Creatives.

Take a minute to think of the incredible people who have helped Gee get back on his feet… the helicopter crew, the hospital staff, and the people on the side of the hill with him that day.

And thanks to Gee for sharing the footage too in such an honest light.

Gee has legitimately entered 'the man - the myth - the legend' status with his utter dedication to riding the gnarliest, most spectacular lines possible. Wishing you a speedy and complete recovery mate, all our hats and helmets are off to you 🙌🤘

And this is a great showcase of: 1. How much of a legend Gee is
2. How important it is to have a responsible group of people around when things go wrong.

That went from one of the best to one of the worst things I’ve ever seen, felt so shocked by the ragdoll effect. Don’t think I could re-watch that. Unbelievable. You are heroic/nuts/a legend

Incredible. From beginning to end. I remember watching the crash…I still close my eyes when I know it comes…but man you are brave. Listening how scary it is, and then watching you ride it is something else…I am glad you are okay, and you can show in a very realistic and honest way how this stuff can be dangerous. Also big thumbs up for the helicopter/hospital/sanitary crew. Can’t wait to see your next adventures!!!

I love this sport so much...

4 years ago I became ill and after that I can't walk on my own.
I just want to ride again on my hometrail and have a good time on my bike but I can't.
It was one of the hardest days in my life, when I gave it away...

Hope you guys appreciate that health is the most important thing in life.
It can change so fast...
Live every fucking second like it's your last and be thankful for every ride you can take with your friends🙏🏻

I love your Videos because the give me the motivation to fight for my dream (get back on a bike) 💪🏻

he hit the nail on the head. "how the hell you gonna shoot this"
That is one of the most beautifully shot pieces ever. The framing of the shots and cinematography just adds the enormity of this.

The most brutal off I’ve ever seen. Glad Gee is still with us! I’m proud to live in the UK and to benefit from having the NHS.

Gee... I've said this a thousand times before "you are not built right, lad".

Massive props for putting this together and heal up fast dude. You're a legend and so are the people who supported you on that day.

From a paramedic: you're a lucky, lucky dude.

One of the best yet saddest but most inspiring mountain biking videos I've ever seen. Gee just exposed the reality of filming and all the difficulties in the "behind the scenes" in such a brutally honest way.
Thanks for showing us this
Get well very soon Gee!

Gee has such a mentality to keep going and doing what he loves, no matter the situation he'll always find the motivation to push though... Mad respect 🙌🙏🏽

It's a beautiful thing.... To be so humble and honest about the whole process. It was a tough watch to see someone get hurt so badly, yet so inspired to know they are able to get back to it and push the boundaries of biking even more.
Fair play to you, Gee.
We're so lucky to have the rescue services on hand and health services to follow up and rebuild fellow humans who dare challenge the norms. 🙏💪🏽
