I decided to try and grow cactus seeds as this can be an affordable option compared to buying established plants. I knew this process was going to take awhile, but didn't think it would take this long haha

Although I've not grown cactus from seed many times before, I've always found a light top dressing of sand helpful.

Cactus are not my thing but I’m definitely sending this to some planty friends who are because it’s so informative.

I really enjoyed this video. During covid lockdown I learned how to grow cacti from seed by watching youtube and planted over 1000 seeds! I was way more meticulous with my planting process (to a ridiculous degree compared to your method lol): sterilized the soil in the microwave, sanitized the pots, soaked the soil in distilled water, sprayed with dilute hydrogen peroxide, sprinkled cinnamon on top, and then put them in ziploc bags. I left them in the bags for a full year and never opened them! I didn't use a heat mat so mine grew a lot slower than yours but I did have them under grow lights. After a year I repotted 300 baby cacti even though they were small like yours (even smaller!). I'm curious to see if yours do well in that chunky mixture. I repotted mine to a mostly inorganic mix but the particle size was much smaller. I'm amazed you had such good results and didn't even worry about sterilizing anything! Really looking forward to periodic updates. Also yours may benefit from some really dilute fertilizer. Some of them looked a tad pale imho.

To prevent root-rot the plants shoud be dry before replanting, the soil can contain very little moisture. There will be far less root-rot if you wait a week until the first watering.
Happy growing!

This was wonderful! I’ve tried unsuccessfully to grow cactus from seeds ages ago, and have since turned to a Quebec company for cactus and succulent plants instead. Now you’ve made me want to attempt plants from seeds once again. I’ll be watching for your updates. Thanks, this was so interesting. 🌵🌵

I would suggest tweezers in one hand and pointed chopsticks in the other - I think it would give you more control than the pencil and you can still use the chopsticks for tamping down soil and adjusting roots

U had good results on the whole, directions say to sterilise the soil but u didn’t & and seemed to be absolutely fine!
