He’s absolutely right about quarantining. I’ve just HAD to have a Petco fish before without a quarantine tank at home, and to say that I made a ton of more work for myself is putting it mildly. But it’s better than losing an entire tank or fish room. It might not happen EVERY time, but always quarantine so you don’t have to worry.

my 2 cents. Keep your quarantine tank as small as is reasonable. Meds go in based on water volume. It gets very expensive medicating fish in a large tank! Great video!

I started with two guppies from my son’s classroom (4th grade), he brought home a note from his teacher that said we could adopt two of the class guppies if we wanted them. Me having an empty 10 gallon decided we could take two in. Of course we got a male and female, and of course we got babies a few weeks later. After three batches of babies I finally got smart and separated them into two ten gallon tanks one for males one for females. The babies stopped and I could enjoy all the fish we now had (around 50/60 between the two tanks…yes overcrowded but room was an issue as I had 12 three gallon betta tanks back then too…). I am starting up again with guppies, first tank will be a 20 long where they can free breed….for a while. 😁

Edited for autocorrect…😔

I too am an opportunistic eater. LOL. Good advice. My humpback dragon puffer really appreciates a good cull. It's the circle of life.

As someone already stated a small tank is best for QT tanks(in case you have to or want to medicate). Note that a qt tank does not actually have to be a tank - you can even use a bucket or a Sterlite tub/container they sell at Dollar General . I suggest always running an extra sponge filter in an established tank so you always have one ready for when you do have to set up a QT tank (if you are not buying fish all the time then there is no need to have a QT tank up and running all the time) - Just my comments for the algorithm - Have a nice day

Other than a fish from the puffer family, what other predatory/omnivore freshwater fish do people recommend to deal with culls (fry and adult sized) ? I've thought about having guppies again but I usually tend to have planted tanks and generally have a lot of survivors in my colony tanks.

Yea I’m an idiot lost 9 guppies already and only have two left with 5 babies also, so now I’ve medicated the tank cause I did notice some fin rot hopefully I can pull through losing fish.

I tried to control my exploding guppy population with a convict cichlid. She's big. She's hungry. She's not making a dent in their population.
